Raphaelle or Raphaella? Last name starts 'la'

I'm the one still annoying you with questions about names that work in French and English (DH is French Canadian, were living perm in the UK), DH is insisting on soemthing that works well in both...and fair enough.

  1. We both like Raphaelle, but are british people going to see Raphaelle as a boys name, or can we get over this?
  1. Does Raphaella La Rouge (not our last name but quite similar) sound like too many lalalala's (this is why I'm leaning to Raphaelle...)
  1. Any nice baby girl nn's for either? (not Ellie)

I'm due soon so I'll stop with my annoying posts in the near future!!

yeeees... maybe a bit too lalala?
BUT if you do it without it will sound like:
raphaella rouge, will it not?
it's an ok name but doesnt really work either way with your surname!! sorry!!
what are your other ideas?

I'm not really a fan of feminised male names tbh. To answer your questions though....

  1. No, you probably won't get over this. People are way more tolerant about names these days, but I would say you and your DD are always going to run into 'gender assumption issues' with that name.

  2. I think you're right, too many la sounds, so if you're dead set on using one of the names, I would go for Raphaelle.

  3. Other than Elle, nothing springs to mind.

Sorry, don't think that helps much, but best of luck with your pregnancy!

This is what I was thinking...stinkypants,

I have these names its on another thread (still page 1)
Angéline; Eloïse; Claudia; Elodie; Evangéline; Sasha

But I only really like: Angéline; Eloïse;Evangéline (middle name will be Grace)

DH has vetoed literally 100's argh! I have literally been through the names of every baby name used in Quebec last year, as this information is available (even if only 1 baby took a particular name!!!!) and I'm running out. In a way there is no point me asking for suggestions because I've been there over and over the last 8 months, I really love Ines but he wont hear of it...

I came up with Séren and Thalia this week, good frenglish ones I thought but he doesn't like them. They have to be said by both languages easily enough, and easily spelt because our last name is one we always have to spell out, this is what DH says.Oh and we both have to like it!!

thanks also lucyloulou, I take your points, I personally like feminised male names but I appreciate what you say...

Your point no 2 about Raphaella La...makes it sound like an over-embellished stage name.

What does your dh like?

Inez/Ines is quite lovely, I agree.

sedgiebaby · 25/08/2010 17:41

Thanks Dinahrod, Angéline; Eloïse; Evangéline all come from his shortlist. In the end I gave up on my lists and him saying, no no no no no no and said 'right you come up with a list and I will see what I like', he also loves 'Angelie' but said by most English people sounds wrong, I had discounted Raphaelle before because of concerns outlined above, but thought I'd think about it again.

DH also likes Florence (too popular for me) and Gabrielle but I hate Gabby as a nn and just not keen anyway...there were some others too like Sabrina but that's not going to happen. And the odd top 5 one like Olivia and Isabel but again I didn't want anything top 20 really.

Ines Luisa/Eloise would be beautiful and distinctive.

Eloise is increasingly popular btw if that's important to you, I know quite a number, including my niece.

sedgiebaby · 25/08/2010 17:54

As in about to be top 10-50 popular? I don't mind if it is familiar to people, that possibly a good thing, I just don't want her to be one of 5 and be called the 'tall Eloise' because she will be tall, we are both long and gangly

OP posts:
DinahRod · 25/08/2010 18:23

Would say in the 10-50 stats. The only problem with that you can't guarantee the spread! For instance there were 3 Rowans in my ds' small nursery class, yet there is only one Jack in his bigger primary class.

Anyway, maybe present dh with your shortlist of Hickory, Dickory, Dock, Eloise and Ines and 'allow' him to choose one off it?

KateF · 25/08/2010 18:34

I have a French-Canadian friend who is settled here permanently. She is Sylvie and her dd Emelie- both names seem to work well in English and French but you've probably considered them already!!! FWIW I don't think Raphaelle or Raphaella work with your surname but they are lovely names.

sedgiebaby · 25/08/2010 18:43

lol DinahRod good thinking!

I'm hoping I'll soon see the ONS list, for 2009 I think it is due out soon.

KateF, I quite Sylvie, not sure about Emelie, DH likes Aurelie but as I have told him that will be 'orally' said by English people :S

i like all 3 of Angéline; Eloïse;Evangéline -probably eloise the best. i have only come across one and she is about 10 yrs old. oh actually she is elise - so i dont know any!!

horatia · 25/08/2010 21:15

TBH I don't think Raphelle or Raphaella go with your surname.

I like

Angeline Grace
Angelica Grace
Eloise Grace
Clarissa Grace
Louisa Grace
Rachelle Grace
Aurelia Grace
