Please don't tell me Ellis is more of a girls name?

Expecting DS2. Ellis is the one name we both really like. Goes well with DS1 (uncommon but not weird), our families are all from Wales, and I just really like it. But I did a search on it on mumsnet and it seems to come up more for a girls name choice than a boys!

What do people think of Ellis and is it completely unisex, or have you heard it used more on girls than boys? I don't know any Ellis' btw.

I think mathanxiety makes a interesting point, I think agree once a name becomes unisex and given to enough girls, to me it become less acceptable to give a boy a girly name than it does to give a girl a more masculine stronger sounding one...not sure if I'm making sense now lol...

I think of it mainly as a surname, but as a first name I'd think of it as a boys' name.

DessieLou · 25/08/2010 21:07

Definately a boys name. Personally I would find it strange on a girl. I like it though!

jellybeans · 26/08/2010 12:41

I see it as a boys name but it is abit girly. I know an Elliot and an Ellis who get 'Elli' for short.

BabyValentine · 26/08/2010 12:43

I'd definitely assume Boy if I heard this name. As in Ell-iss.

Elise (Elle-eese) would be the only similar girl's name that I know of.

BigBadMummy · 26/08/2010 12:44

I know two, both boys.

bruffin · 26/08/2010 12:48

Only know one Ellis who would be in his twenties now. Never thought of it as a girls name.

Dillon is definitely not a Welsh spelling, never seen it before so I assume it must be American? The correct Welsh pronounciation of Dylan sounds like Dull-an than the English way of Dill-an. Also the Welsh spelling is Elis although I'm sure you get Welsh people called Ellis too! :)

According to me "Ellis" is surely a boys name.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 10/05/2016 19:40

Sorry, but just on personal opinion. It does sound quite effeminate to me. I hope I've not upset you by saying that.
However I am in the minority in my thinking so if you like it go for it.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 10/05/2016 19:48

I think it's a boy's name but maybe in US is used as a female name more. Like Meredith Grey's mother (and daughter).

GreenBeans17 · 18/05/2016 23:42

I'd guess a boy

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 18/05/2016 23:47

I only know one Ellis - male in his 30s.

I do remember him being told by a drunk student that it was a girl's name though.

Dangerouswoman · 18/05/2016 23:50

I know one boy Ellis and one girl Ellis.
