What do you think of Edith as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

Fab, fab, fab, is DD's name.

clemetteattlee · 22/08/2010 23:03

I like it. I prefer Edie though.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 22/08/2010 23:04

I love it. But I suspect it may be very popular in a few years...

SirBoobAlot · 22/08/2010 23:08

I love Edith.

Old lady name, best kept that way imo

maktaitai · 22/08/2010 23:23

It was my great aunt's name too, and it's a glorious name. I've just realised I don't know what it means.

SirBoobAlot · 22/08/2010 23:41

Doesn't have a particularly nice meaning, tbh - "successful / prosperous in war". Although another translation from the Anglo-Saxon is "warrior for the good", which is slightly sweeter!

Apologies to anyone who has named their child Edith but I really don't like it. It just sounds so old.

zenoushka · 23/08/2010 00:26

I prefer Edie.

tilbatilba · 23/08/2010 00:37

Adore it, the two I know are both Edie

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 23/08/2010 00:42

I adore it, and Edie is a fantastic nickname - I'm not a fan of giving people nicknames as their real name, so I'd stick with Edith for the BC.

And I am not at all biased in this opinion by the fact that my daughter is named Edith Clare, and called Edie.

Clary · 23/08/2010 00:48

I really love this name.

It's not that popular (I have onyl heard of two in the whole of this area, know one well Grin).

Means "rich war", excellent! Good strong name, also like the fact that it ends in neither ie (as in Maisie, Daisy, Milly) nor a as in Olivia, Amelia, Melissa etc) so that sets it apart somehow.

People always seem to post on MN that it's very very popular but honestly, apart from Fivegomad I really know very few (and I don't know fivegomad but YKWIM.

It was also the name of the last English queen - Edward the Confessor's wife. And Harold (killed at Battle of Hastings) had a mistress called Edith Swan Neck - just a bit of history for you!)

tummytickler · 23/08/2010 07:11

Not keen. I rather like some of the other older names (Enid, Beryl etc), but not keen on Edith sorry.

theagedparent · 23/08/2010 09:22

I like it

yellowflowers · 23/08/2010 09:50

Is lovely.

sethstarkaddersmum · 23/08/2010 09:51

gorgeous.

travellingrose · 23/08/2010 11:47

I don't think it is popular currently?
This is possible first name. Middle name would be Violet or Violetta.

Anyone else think of Edith Bowman? Not sure why but, although I quite like her, I can't get beyond this for some reason!

Cortina · 23/08/2010 11:48

Prefer Agatha which for some reason strikes me as in a similar vein.

travellingrose · 23/08/2010 11:52

I don't like Agatha for a baby, it's my aunt's name. No I didn't think of Edith Bowman.
