Not sure about ancient but Zoe is a greek name

Loujalou · 20/08/2010 09:53

Zoe means life. I always liked that.

Are you Greek or English - who just wants to have a Greek name?

capucine · 20/08/2010 10:18

I am French
My son has a French name and my daughter an Indian name.
I love Callista but I really love Cassiopée.
I am just looking for other ideas.
I prefer a name without A at the end.
I love Isis as well.
Thanks

capucine · 20/08/2010 12:57

I love Cassiopee, Isis, Iris
I am not sure about Eirene prononciation.
How do you prononce Cassiopea ?

OP posts:
PollyLogos · 20/08/2010 13:04

In Greece Eirene would be pronounced Irini with the stress on the middle i. The english version of this is of course Irene.

Cassiopea in Greece is Kassiopi with the stress on the o.

IrenePollock · 20/08/2010 13:22

I know that Isis came from Egypt, however she was worshiped by the Greeks wasn't she?

Yes, Zoe is a v. ancient greek name - used for thousands of years and was popular in the Byzantine empire. Two early saints were called Zoe. The word Zoe is used in the New Testament in the original greek to refer to eternal life.

See - www.behindthename.com/name/zoe

mathanxiety · 20/08/2010 20:29

I love Charis (pr Kah-riss), also Calantha and Evadne. (Love Calista too).

TaurielTest · 20/08/2010 20:36

In English you'd pronounce Cassiopeia/Cassiopea as kass-ee-oh-PEE-uh or possibly kass-ee-oh-PAY-uh.

And Calliope as kuh-LIGH-oh-pee. I had a friend at school called this, and she sometimes got KAL-ee-ohp.

Some of these names are lovely. Have a look at the original myths though, you might not want an Electra or a Cassandra once you've checked the back story :)

PollyLogos · 20/08/2010 20:45

Puddock is right about the back stories!

I wanted Cassandra for my third and everybody here in Greece freaked. (Didn't matter in the end as baby was a boy!)
