Is Cerrie on drugs this morning?

Poor Siofra, had an accent over her name (don't know the proper name for it) and Cerrie called her Stofra.

Then Roby, pronounced Row-bee. Surely that would be pronounced Robbie?

Anyway, I am clearly bored. Back to work.

I know the BBC has a pronounciation unit so maybe they advised her.

lifeinagoldfishbowl · 19/08/2010 12:03

I would have thought Roby would be Row Bee

suwoo · 19/08/2010 12:47

But it was an accent on the i in Siofra, not a t. Like this

OK, I'll let her off on Roby, but I bet it was Robbie.

Its like her pronouncing Niamh as Ni-am or something.

I am not even Irish.

Poor little kid. Perhaps they ought to use wikipedia in future instead of their own pronunciation unit!

BuntyPenfold · 19/08/2010 12:54

How is it pronounced ?

suwoo · 19/08/2010 12:55

I linked to the pronounciation above Bunty.

Well I think if you are silly enough to call your child a random name that it isn't obvious how to say it - that you should write how it's said on the back of the cbeebies care ie Row Bee or Rob Bee

tethersend · 19/08/2010 13:14

Never mind that, she said the word 'special' about 50 times at lunchtime. Maybe she's having a tough day.

suwoo · 19/08/2010 13:22

I agree goldfishbowl. I always wonder if people do. I love listening to the crazy names on there. I remember Obi Wan once.

I think I roffled all day.

Suwoo- seriously? That's so funny. Hope it was a nickname, poor kid.

mathanxiety · 19/08/2010 16:57

Poor child. I am feeling the pain.

Galena · 19/08/2010 18:20

Was that the same birthday time that had 'Allyce'?

SagacityNell · 19/08/2010 18:31

Poor girl was how old - 2? prob not even noticed tbh.

Tuschinski · 19/08/2010 22:27

Siofra is pronounced She-fra but I agree the parents should have written it phonetically on the back.

5DollarShake · 20/08/2010 06:44

Roby pronounced Robbie - why would it be? Confused

Romy is pronounced Row-mee.

Where there is just one consonant (in this case a 'b') separating the vowels, it usually means the first vowel is said as it sounds when reading the alphabet - so the 'o' sounds like an 'o'.

Galena · 20/08/2010 07:48

I assumed it was like Toby, so Row-Bee as she said.

Rockbird · 20/08/2010 08:52

Usually they're pretty good so I always assumed that the pronunciation was written on the back, obviously not in this case. Poor Cerrie probably got the card and thought, shit, shit! :o

greentriangle · 20/08/2010 09:04

Poor Cerrie.

I've never heard of those names and I think if you give a child a name that is unusual, then you should expect it to be mispronounced sometimes.
