Registering this morning, spelling dilemma. Help!

Have chosen Mali, partly because it is welsh. It is pronounced rhyming with Sally, but I realise it will often be mispronounced with a long a, as in the country.

Should I spell it Mallie, avoiding a life-time of correcting people? Googling Mallie, it is an English nick- name based on Mary. This dilutes the Welsh connection but makes her life easier? It is not common in Wales and not all Welsh people I have consulted have heard of it.

Unsure......

Thanks

Go for Mali.

BikeRunSki · 19/08/2010 09:05

If you have chosen because it is Welsh, then keep the Welsh spelling. Otherwise it is no longer Welsh!

pebblejones · 19/08/2010 09:07

Go for Mali... My husband has a unusual Welsh name and is forever correcting peoples pronunciation or telling them how to spell it, but he would prefer that than anglicising it. When people get to know your DC there will be no problem with pronunciation.

Flighttattendant · 19/08/2010 09:11

It's not going to take more than once to make people understand - not like naming her something really unpronouncable.

She can always adopt the different spelling later if she chooses.

lovely name btw.

Tillyscoutsmum · 19/08/2010 09:14

I prefer Mali. Mallie looks a bit made up imho. She probably will need to correct people and spell her name a lot, but at least its only 4 letters Smile . Lovely name

SqueezyB · 19/08/2010 09:30

go for Mali. I used to know one and always thought what a lovely name!

cottoncloud · 19/08/2010 09:37

Thank you for replies, very helpful. SqueezyB, excited you knew one! Was she welsh and do you know if it was a Nick name and how people pronounced it?

Definitely Mali, love it have known a few as we live in Wales.

Would love to use it but have a Molly and don't want to sound like a CBeebies programme!

Bacofoil · 19/08/2010 09:44

Never heard the name but it's lovely.

I don't know much about Welsh names but i HATE Irish misspellings like Shaun and Shevaun so go with Mali.

mejon · 19/08/2010 09:51

Definitely Mali. I love it and it is getting quite popular here (in Wales) - not that that is a bad thing. Considered it for DD but it is the name of my mother's dog and our cat is Molly so it didn't feel quite right. Mallie looks 'wrong' - though having said that, my maternal grandmother (from North Wales) was called 'Sallie' Confused.

BudaisintheZONE · 19/08/2010 09:51

Def Mali. Lovely name.

sorrento56 · 19/08/2010 10:02

I have spent most of my life spelling my name for people but I am still glad I have it. Go with Mali, definitely.

ShirleyKnot · 19/08/2010 10:08

I've got a welsh name which requires constant spelling and correcting.

It's fine. Doesn't bother me.

Go with Mali.

horatia · 19/08/2010 10:44

I'd go for Mallie. I think most people will mispronounce Mali as Marley.

I'd stick with spelling, but if I read it I would pronouce that mar-lee. I'd be wrong though!

yellowflowers · 19/08/2010 11:53

Stick with the proper spelling - people will only need to be told a couple of times before they get it right. Lovely name by the way.

DuelingFanjo · 19/08/2010 11:55

Stick with Mali, it's the right way.

nickelbabe · 19/08/2010 11:57

keep Mali.

it will get pronounced wrongly, but my name is andrea and there appear to be quite a few pronunciations of that too! Grin

better to be spelt correctly and pronounced wrongly than to be spelt wrongly.

SoupDragon · 19/08/2010 11:58

Definitely stick with Mali.

seaturtle · 19/08/2010 16:40

Stick with Mali. Nice name.

SqueezyB · 19/08/2010 16:52

sorry, didn't see your reply! Yes she was Welsh and it was her full name - it was pronounced as you say - rhyming with Sally. Don't think she had much of a problem with people getting it wrong.
