That is a long list, I would sit down with your partner and see which ones he likes and come up with a short list and then see if that puts you closer to the decision.

Pfishofplight · 18/08/2010 14:23

Juliet
Judith
Louisa
Jean
Lydia
Joy
Mary
Miriam
Audrey

I've narrowed it down to these. The other name are too whacky compared to your dc more mainstream names. I deleted the nicknames too, like Peggy.

Thanks - sorry it is very long Grin.
I really appreciate all the opinions, so any more would be really great.
I am going to work on a shorter list, believe it or not, this one was much longer, I have already got rid of loads!

OP posts:
LamberDinghy · 18/08/2010 15:25

With Pearl I would avoid Margaret, Peggy (short for Margaret) and Opal, as Pearl can be a derivative of Margaret as well and Opal sounds like a set. Lydia more popular than the sibling names.

I would go for Juliet, Joy, Roberta or Mary.

Cortina · 18/08/2010 15:38

Gwendolyn/ Gwendolen - Gwen in Gavin & Stacey, or Gwendolen Mary Lacey in Mallory Towers or a plain teenage Dutch girl

Shirley - 'how can you lie there and think of England when you don't even know whose in the team'?
Quite like it, popular again in 15 years.

Peggy - a dog or obese piano teacher with halitosis

Juliet - like but people have revived and now getting more popular

Marjorie - see Shirley

Roberta - Australian temp who isn't as popular as she'd like

Judith- great and and will be popular again in 5 years but not yet!

Angela - will be cooler in 15 years

Hilda - will be cool in 50 years

Louisa - a bit dull, for people that think Louise is dull and trying to be exotic

Rita - cool in 80 years

Sally - pleasantly plain

Ernestine - no comment

Mildred - Hubble. Popular again in 40 years

Ethel - Popular in 100 years time

Jean - Pride of Miss Jean

Virginia - like

Augusta - Don't like the inevitable (?) 'Gussie/Gus/Gusset' nm

Dahlia - ok

Luella - Benjamin

Joan - like it, will be cool again in about 10 yrs

Marigold - like it, see Joan

Enid - needs longer for people to grow into the name

Beryl - Reid

Juniper - Jennifer Juniper, gin

Genevieve - sometimes middle class attempt at being posh or a bit different but ok.

Nora - like it, especially Leonora, nm Nora

Margaret - ok as a middle name

Cordelia - getting more popular

Magnolia - paint, another word for bland

Zinnia - ok

Daphne - will get more popular soon

Luna - Frank Lampard or Harry Potter, take your pick

Lydia - tattooed lady, 'she once swept an Admiral clear off his feet, the ships on her hips made his heart skip a beat'. Ok.

Myrtle - Great Gatsby floosy, ok.

Ziva - ?

Prudence - good motto for these troubled times, not keen

Joy - prefer Bliss

Mary - ok

Miriam - ok

Anne - ok, a bit plain but will be the only one in nursery, reception etc.

Opal - ok, car?
Audrey - Corrie rather than Hepburn maybe in time?

Nina - Garcia, not keen personally

Vera - Duckworth

Cortina · 18/08/2010 15:46

That should read 'when you don't even know who's in the team' sorry. :).

mixedmamameansbusiness · 18/08/2010 15:48

Oh I missed loads... Juliet is lovely

ValiumSingleton · 18/08/2010 16:33

Gwendolyn/ Gwendolen - quite like it. I like Gwyneth too actually, Paltrow notwithstanding.....
Shirley - no I am not ready for this. Too many awful ones still alive.
Peggy - as with shirley
Juliet - LOVE this one, this is not exactly your taste though?

Marjorie - She is a friend of shirley's right?
Roberta - Ok,,,,,, Very PG Woodehouse. Bobbie.

Ethel - Lovely. such a nice sound. why won't it come back?

Joan - ok. Joanie I like. Again, mad men is glamming it up!
Marigold - quirky, I like it. The only thing is it also reminds me of gloves unfortunately.
Enid - no
Beryl - lovely! LOVE Meryl and I love Myrtle. Myrtle very cool, not everybody could bring a Myrtle into their family.
Juniper - Ok. Bit try hard, and in a predictable try-hard way! obviously you are trying hard, and that's ok! but Juniper seems to be trying hard in a more conventionally predictable try hard way. NO offence - sorry to mums of Junipers. It's actually not bad, I'm really nit-picking here.
Genevieve - too disney for me
Nora - bit dull but Leonora is gorgeous
Margaret - I love it!
Cordelia - I love it.
Magnolia - I love it. I love Maggie too
Zinnia - Nice, btu wouldn't pick it. fussy
Daphne - no. ugly imo
Luna - no, spanish for Moon.

Lydia - Lovely in a very conventional way. Sister to Juliet kind of way.
Myrtle - oh em gee hun! Wink
Ziva - no, Zelda though, yes. Xenia?
Prudence - no. Fugly.
Joy - I love this one. It stands out because it's so simple but it's pretty and there are hardly any.
Mary - I like this but would never use it. I like Marianne.
Miriam - I love it
Anne - no, but nancy or annie yes
Opal - no. Not awful though.
Audrey - not my style.
Nina - lovely! like Joy imo. Would stand out amongst the longer frillier names.
Vera- ok but I would never pick it, not pretty enough. In the same style as Rita I guess but not as nice. What about Vero with a french accent nicer if that's not to faux!?

Cortina · 18/08/2010 16:38

Good advice from Valim there, we are on the same page with a few. Esp Nora/Leonora - why isn't Leonora (Leo or Nora) more popular? Beautiful, under-used, long established name.

Mary, Miriam, Anne and Judith are OT and NT names that would go well with your boys' names and the feel of the girls' names.
Joy, Vera and Daphne seem to fit well, and all are attribute/ virtue names. Daphne would go very well with Iris.

Gwendolyn/ Gwendolen - love Gwendolen, dislike y spelling. It's surprisingly unusual.

PYT · 19/08/2010 20:20

I love Lydia, Nina and Miriam. Lovely, simple, womanly names.

I really like Gwendolyn. Gwen is a nice nickname. Also like Juliet, Louisa, Dahlia, Cordelia and Audrey.

The real old lady names - Mildred, Enid etc - I think are vile, I'm afraid.

PYT · 19/08/2010 20:20

Forgot to say I also love Mary.
