Alice etc??

OH and I are sorted on our boy's name, but can't decide on girls' names at all. Here's our list:
Alice
Abigail (probably shortened to Abby in the future)
Sylvie
Isabel/Isabella (but our boy name is Edward which I really really love - I'm worried if this baby is a girl and we use Isabella, that means I can't then have Edward for a future boy or people will think I'm a sad Twilight obsessive. Is this a realistic fear?!)

We both like Alice the most - but our surname begins with Pa- (it's not Parnell, but it sounds similar if that makes sense) - when you read it out loud, do you think it sounds fine or do you kind of say Ali Spar...if you see what I mean? I'm not sure if it doesn't kind of "slur" together in the middle. If the general consensus is that it doesn't do this we will probably go with Alice, but what do you guys think and what do you think of the rest of the shortlist? Hope this makes some kind of sense!

I love the name Alice

lurcherlover · 16/08/2010 18:12

I do too, but it's whether it "goes" with our surname or not that bothers me!

I am an Alice, and had a maiden name that made it sound like "Alison" on the phone. With my married name, I become an old rocker. All things considered I think Alice Parnell is lovely!

ValiumSingleton · 16/08/2010 18:39

I like Celia which is the letters of alice in a different order.

Sylvie and Abbie are both prettier than Alice imo. I don't dislike Alice - it's just a bit sssssssssssssssssy at the end.

taffetacatski · 16/08/2010 18:47

I love Alice, its DD's middle name. DH wouldn't countenanace it as a first name as he is reminded of some song " Who the F* is Alice ?" which I had never heard of.

champagnesupernova · 16/08/2010 18:50

May I ask what your boy's names are please?

lurcherlover · 16/08/2010 20:10

Edward is definitely the boy's name. That's why I'm worried about using Isabella this time round in case no.2 is a boy and it's too Twilight!

I think Alise is lovely as well. Does that help with the surname at all?

KERALA1 · 16/08/2010 22:22

Would avoid the Isabel/la names tbh not because they aren't lovely but are very very common and have now been done to death.

Belgrano · 16/08/2010 22:28

Agree with Kerala, sooo many Isabellas in the last few years and as i thought it must be coming to an end, even more are appearing! Alice gorgeous but I am biased Wink

mumtoabeautifulbabyboy · 16/08/2010 22:38

I would agree re Isabella. As a teacher they become Isabella a, b etc as we have so many. It is a pretty name so if that doesn't bother you then go fo it.

zenoushka · 16/08/2010 23:52

I really like Sylvie - very pretty.

Atlasive · 17/08/2010 12:00

I like Abigail best of your choices, and Isabella.

I prefer Sylvia to Sylvie, as it sounds bolder (rather than "trying not to use Sylvia").

Not particularly keen on Alice.

lurcherlover · 17/08/2010 18:15

I didn't realise Isabella was so popular - are you a primary teacher mumtoa...? I'm secondary so we get the popular names a little later - at the moment we're overrun with Megans and Laurens! No doubt the Isabellas will filter through in ten years or so...that does put me off a bit though.

Sylvie I love because of the ballerina Sylvie Guillem, a hero of mine - I don't know if it's a bit pretentious using a French name when we're not French though. OH doesn't like it so it probably won't be the one we use. Looks like it's Alice v Abigail!

Just used Alice for my new daughters middle name. Lovely Smile

NoTeaForMe · 19/08/2010 16:25

Isabelle, Isabella, issy, issy, ella. Just in this year 1 that I have taught. Admittedly over 3 classes but that's 5 out of 60! Also lily, lili and 3 olivias!

Hope that helps?

I really like Alice, and shortened to Ally too, had an Alice a couple of years ago and she kind of put me off the name as she wasnt that nice but that's only my biased experience!

emptyshell · 19/08/2010 16:46

My brownie pack has, out of 20 kids, four Alices.

Does make things handy if I need to call on someone to help - if I shout Alice I've got a pretty good percentage chance of getting someone!

They're all lovely girls though.

SpiderWilliam · 19/08/2010 16:59

Alice is definitely the nicest IMO. I think it sounds fine with your surname. The two names do run into each other a bit so you could avoid this with something like:
Alicia
Alissa
Alesha
Or the wonderfully unfashionable Alison ('tis my name) Wink
But I assume you have already discounted these?

morganbuffay · 20/08/2010 11:01

Sylvie is gorgeous. It seems to be getting a bit more use these days, not popular yet but not completely unknown and French-only. "Alice Parnell" is fine I think, though. I find Abby a bit bland and while I do like Isabel/la, it is huge right now.

AbFabT · 20/08/2010 13:20

What lovely taste you have - my name is Abigail, and my middle name is Alice! Grin

wigglesrock · 20/08/2010 21:44

Just going to mention it ... Alice is Edward's sister in Twilight saga and yes I do mean saga Grin

Alishanty · 20/08/2010 22:13

Alice is my name. Never liked it when I was younger as I was the only one in the whole school, it seemed a bit 'old fashioned' then. Now, i love it. Hated it a few yrs back when that 'who the f is Alice' song came out but think that is long gone now, my bf didnt even know about it. Agree that Isabella/Isobel has been done to death, there are 3 in my son's yr who is starting reception in Sep.

stleger · 20/08/2010 22:22

I love Abigail Alice!
