Aver? Unisex names?

DP suggested the name Aver for our unborn baby girl. Wondered what you all think? We have a DS, aged 4, with a pretty normal name though I think they go okay together. Maybe it's my hormones talking but I think I do like Aver alot.

Also wondered what your views are on unisex names? The obvious one would be Ashley (think Ashley from Corrie, Ashley Cole, etc..) but a friend of mine recently called her little girl Samuel. Hmm?

Unisex names that spring to mind are Alex, Jo, Sam, Sydney, Troy, Cameron and Blaise. Also nicknames like Georgie, Jamie, Phil and Eddie.

I'm not sure about Aver - would it be pronounced like the verb, or as "Ava"?

Unisex names are fine, but is Aver even a name? I always thought it was a verb (to aver).

I quite like the "girls with geeky boy's names " thing doing the rounds. Dexter, Dylan/Dillan and Ellis are good I think. I also like Meredith (which is a boy's name to me but obviously works either way.)

Does it sound a bit like 'Have Her'?

mathanxiety · 13/08/2010 21:24

It is a verb, meaning to positively declare something.

Avery is much nicer, and is actually a name, and Arden and Aven are both nice imo, as is Aster. Samuel is taking things a bit too far, though. I know a girl with the middle name of Michael.

Oooh, I love Arden. So pretty. seriously considered it for DD2.

Avery reminds me of this business stationery company, and aviaries. I have never heard of Aver. I'd go for Ava or Evelyn instead.

I quite like it!
I remember on here a while ago there was a poster who had a girl called Persephone who had her named abbreviated to Percy. I think that's an absolute classic.

Just wondering, if you live somewhere where they pronounce a last syllable 'r' like Scotland it wouldn't sound so much like Ava, but otherwise it really will just sound like Ava.

Appletrees · 18/08/2010 00:09

Arden harden sorry.

Appletrees · 18/08/2010 00:12

To ardently aver. Or Gaynor Arden? There are so many pretty names out there. Why risk it.
