I'm due in 4 weeks and really need help deciding on a name. We like James as his middle... and McMillan is our surname.
Just wondering if people think these are too popular?

Oliver less likely to date than Finn IMO

tummytickler · 11/08/2010 19:58

Oliver. Finlay/Finn is so faddy and super popular. I am really tired of hearing it. Oliver is also really popular, but at least it is more classic (ie it was popular when I was a kid 30 years ago.)

PaulineCampbellJones · 11/08/2010 20:26

Agree, Oliver. Finn is a nice name but there seems to be one everywhere I turn.

LaundryLyne · 11/08/2010 21:26

Oliver, definitely.

SenoraPostrophe · 11/08/2010 21:31

my ds is finlay james

there are a few of them indeed, but I don't think that matters. and so what if it does "date"? I've never met anyone who moans about their name being "dated", I guess because they'll be of an age to match the date.

it means "pale warrior". if ds had been dark he would have been dougal (="dark stranger" )

If James is definitely the mn then I think Finlay James sounds better, and use Finn as a nickname.

I like Oliver too but Oliver James is the name of song and a journalist and also sounds like Jamie Oliver... so too many connections/associations and that would put me off

Agree with above, James is very nice in its own right. Fin(n/lay) and Oliver are both OK. Finn probably goes better with the other names, but there are lots around at the moment - 3 in my DS's nursery group.

NotAnotherNewNappy · 11/08/2010 23:20

I like Finlay McMillan - beautiful strong scottish sound to it, far less common than Oliver or James would be.

I think it depends what part of the country you are from i live in manchester and know one Finlay. i have worked in a nursery for 15 years and we have never had a finlay there. Have known a few Olivers over the years but would say they are all 10+.

LittleSilver · 12/08/2010 23:04

All those names are done to death.

Kathleen123 · 13/08/2010 11:32

Oliver!!

jellybeans · 13/08/2010 11:52

Don't like either as too popular but if had to choose one would be Finn/Finley.
