And do you think it may be whisper it a bit too pretentious?

Would be put with very strong English surname - but baby was concieved in Greece

You need to google Artemis Fowl. A series of books about an evil teenage genius (male) - increasingly popular and currently being filmed. Something of a Harry Potter phenomena.

Artemis was the Greek goddess of hunting, so I'd assume from that it's a girl - although the Artemis Fowl thing confuses everything (this is explained in the book).

And yes, really quite pretentious :o.

I understand it's used for girls, sometimes as an alternative to Diana (which I love, but can't use due to the Princess of Wales). I don't think it's pretentious - it's a very very old name that isn't popular. Obv I prefer Diana or Diane - far lovelier sounding IMO.

I love the name Artemis but don't make the mistake (as my friend did) of using it for a boy and going to Greece on holiday. Let's just say it's like the equivalent of introducing your son as "Hyacinth".

Def for a girl Artemis was the Ancient Greek goddess of animals, all things female and wilderness / wildness. Think of the Roman Diana.

I loved it, always wanted it for a girl - can be shortened to 'Art' I guess. However I couldn't use it as not only did I get a boy but my married name sounds as if it should be pronounced in a strong Yorkshire accent. It just wouldn't have gone

I know an Artemis, she's a girl (and Greek).

Unless you actually are greek I think it would seem silly and pretentious.

My baby daughter is Artemis. It suits her and is lovely imo :).

Beautiful name, the Greek version of Diana, and not only the goddess of hunting, but also the goddess of the moon on earth. A really interesting and pretty name and I don't think it's at all pretentious, just unusual.

Nope its a boys name too - I have had a look on fb at some of my relatives who have male friends called Artemis.

Artemis is our online room booking system at work so that'd be a no from me.

Although it's pretty crap so will probably disappear in a few years.

Do you know I've deliberately never read the Artemis Fowl books because it's a girl's name so how is it explained, Hassled? Does he have dumb or nasty parents?

V nice for a girl. Other pretty Greek names: Alethia (means truth, pronounced Aleethya), Eleftheria (means freedom, pronounced ElefthERia), Chryssa (means gold.) I've always loved the name Ilias for a boy (pronounced EElyas)

I know a female Greek Artemis also, although its actually Artemisia....it does get shortened to Arty though so be warned!

I worked with a lovely woman called Artemis many moons ago.

She was an art teacher so was arty by name and by nature.

Artemis is lovely and feminine. Arty is a cute nickname.

Artemis is a little pretentious but its still very nice, no more than some of the fancier English names - Arty or Missy for NN?

It is a girls name but funnily it doesnt feel wrong for a boy from my uncultured perspective, its quite masculine sounding but at the end of the day it would be a bit mean to purposefully name your little boy a girly name IMO.
