Daphne - now more popular? and a question about 'Rosamund' etc

I love Daphne, but I think of a dowdy woman with dandruff in late middle age, also Neighbours, Scooby Doo etc. It's a pity I think in another 20 years it will rocket in popularity.

I also love Rosamund, Rosalind, etc (see someone else has mentioned Rosalind here recently)but it seems always to inevitably become 'Roz' which I am not keen on. Any other short forms you could use?

Are 3 syllable names inevitably shortened. Can you think of any that usually aren't?

NNs - Rose, Rosa, Rosie

Names that aren't usually shortened:
Dahlia
Lucia
Malia
Violet
Sophia
Sienna
Serena
India

I might be missing obvious nicknames there but couldn't think of any!

Cortina · 11/08/2010 10:59

Thanks, not keen on 'Rose' shortenings either, ho hum..
Perhaps 'Monnie' as a nm for Rosamund but that doesn't sound terribly attractive?

I like rosamund, I know one who hated her name as a child and goes by the horrible 'Roz' (imo horrible). Perhaps Rosamund is a bit much for a child though. Lovely on an adult I think.

Daphne is awful i think.

Do you like Christabel? Christabel and Rosamund sound like sisters.

Cortina · 11/08/2010 12:46

Yes, I have always loved Christabel. The world now seems to be swamped with 'a-bell/s' of various descriptions. Also it sort of is in the same genre as Charmain (sp)? in my head and not terribly keen on that. I've also always loved Arabel since I read Arabel's Raven but reminds me of farming. :)

Like Arabella but a bit too posh somehow..Camilla is also in with a chance.

Charmain is horrible. Slap my wrist, but I would expect a Charmain to be an overweight child. I'm going to be chased off mumsnet again now!

Arabella is hard to shorten, and also reminds me of farming! Camilla is nice, if you can put the chain-smoking jodpur-loving blonde helmet haired royal by marriage out of your mind. think I prefer just camille

greentriangle · 11/08/2010 13:03

I know someone called Rosamund. She goes as Ros and hates her full name (she's 30). I think that even if you shortened it to something else, it is likely that later in life, a Rosamund might choose to be called Ros and you wouldn't be able to prevent this.

BuntyPenfold · 11/08/2010 13:33

Rosalind nn Linda?

I think other children will always shorten, India nn Indy , Serena nn Reeny etc, or lengthen! They can't resist changing a name.

I know a Neil (his mum used to say it couldn't be shortened) called Nelly.

SpiderWilliam · 11/08/2010 13:37

Miranda is tricky to shorten perhaps.

SpiderWilliam · 11/08/2010 13:38

Oh, and Daphne = Frasier to me. Loved the series and the character but would struggle to move beyond that and give the name to a DD.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/08/2010 14:37

Rosamund is terribly severe isn't it. It practically gives you catsbumface just saying it. Rosalind is nice, but Ros is inevitable.

Any name will be changed as your child goes through life, you can't stop it. That's why you get so many people saying "please don't call me Benjamin/Alistair/Henrietta, only my mum calls me that! Everyone calls me Ben/Ally/Henny".

at Arabel reminding you of farming. arabella is nice, nn Bella or Ari?

I like Ariadne as a name too, or Artemis maybe nn Arty which is quite cool.

miamix · 11/08/2010 15:42

A friend has just given her daughter the middle name Daphne - it works but mainly because her first name is of a similar style.

I think there was a Daphne in the Malory Towers books - always makes me think of them anyway.

Elephants, Ariadne is my favourite girls' name but OH won't have it. Luckily we've found one I like just as much in case it is a girl (and I have a strong feeling it is!).

GladioliBuckets · 11/08/2010 15:44

I too feel Daphne seems very unsexy. how about Delia, Delphine, Stephanie?

LOL at cat's bum face, can actually see Rosamund herself doing that face as the latecomers to the WI meeting squeeze past. (Sorry CortinaGrin.)

Rose Red, MrsW, I loved her! Much more fun than dreary Katie (post-swing).

Absolutely, Gladioli.

Care to share miamix? Grin

We've got a very young and glamorous cousin called Daphna - it's Croatian and somehow sounds fresher than Daphne.

My DD is called Verity and although 3 syllables it doesn't seem to get shortened....yet!
