I've always loved this for a boy, just seen someone else's choice of all time favourite. Just convincing DP is the problem...:) He just says rice pudding.!

I love it and once saw a gorgeous little boy, think cherub like with a halo of golden curls, in a photo in a lady's house. I asked who it was and she replied 'my Godson, Ambrose'. I've always remembered and always coveted the name. Plus I think it has West Country roots.

I actually really like Ambrose & Ambrosia, it does however conjure up images of rice pudding!

LaundryLyne · 10/08/2010 17:23

Yes, rice pudding. May be a lifetime of rice pudding jokes ahead.

EndangeredSpecies · 10/08/2010 17:25

Lovely name. Rice pudding is also lovely, it's a win-win.

NiceCuppaT · 10/08/2010 18:07

I'm in the west country and don't know anyone called ambrose....dreadful name!

Binkster · 10/08/2010 18:52

I love Ambrose, but my DH doesn't. I especially love it because the furthest ancestor I've got back in my family tree is called Ambrose! I think he might compromise and have it as a middle name. I think of it along the same lines as Gabriel or Reuben.

You never see the Ambrosia adverts any more (do you? I haven't in years). I can see the point about the jokes, but it seems a shame to me not to choose a nice name just because the child might meet a mean person in the future!

MamaLazarou · 10/08/2010 19:35

It is a brilliant name!

LetThereBeRock · 10/08/2010 20:34

I love it.

meadowlarks · 10/08/2010 22:22

I posted this once before and got slated for it. I still really like it, though.

Ondine · 10/08/2010 23:18

DS is Ambrose, I obviously like it but it was DH who really wanted it and I had to be convinced it wasn't too unusual.

I don't have any regrets, most people like it actually.

A few things i've noticed; I've found people think of it as either a very Catholic name and assume we're Catholic without asking, or in London assume DS is african-carribean before meeting him. I do get the odd rice pudding comment but that is very rare - that was more my concern than anything else tbh but it doesn't really happen.

Binkster · 10/08/2010 23:29

Do you call him anything for short Ondine?

Ineedsomesleep · 11/08/2010 09:17

I've always liked this name and saw it recently on a gravestone dating back to the early 1800's in the churchyard in my home village. Since then I've really wanted a little Ambrose.

Can't give you any advice on convincing your DP though.

BuntyPenfold · 11/08/2010 10:03

Rice pudding - sorry

Ondine · 11/08/2010 21:15

He was Brosie when he was very little but it didn't stick. Probably a good thing as a bit babyish.

It's doesn't seem to be a name that really lends itself to a nickname but not such a bad thing if you like the name.

Beegey · 12/08/2010 08:31

I love it but wasn't brave enough to use it. I don't think of rice pudding /custard when I hear of it. Maybe saints/monks...
