Stylish, elegant, 'grown up' girls names?

sedgiebaby · 06/08/2010 10:07

I'm now in my 35 week and this is making me crazy...

I have a kind of frilly last name, DH is French-Canadian, its not unlike 'La Rouge', if not careful with a first name, our DD is going to sound like a show girl/burlesque artist/worse...

e.g. Lexie La Rouge (know what I mean?)

Lots of girls names are either too pretty/girly sounding or have an ending that does not work with the 'la' of the last name: Lilia/amelia/aurelia/Lola La Rouge (try saying it!?)

Another test for me (because of my line of work) is how I would feel introducing myself at a business meeting (I just can't do the milly/poppy/scarlet/molly/ etc nice as they are)

Middle name is going to be 'Grace' a special family connection

For one reason or another I can't have these names but like them.

Claudia Grace La Rouge
Evangeline Grace La Rouge
Alexa Grace La Rouge
Charlotte Grace La Rouge
Sophie/Sophia Grace La Rouge
Seren Grace La Rouge
Ines Grace La Rouge

Any other stylish/elegant/non-frilly suggestions that do not end in la? Doesn't need to be french, as long as sounds alright/easily said by a french speaking person.

Please please help!!

Eva?

Helen Grace is lovely and I think would go well with your last name.

Elisabeth

Leia or Lara. Maybe even Lyra.

mamatomany · 07/08/2010 17:07

I'd go with Grace too elegant to just be a middle name.

I think my favourites would go well with La Rouge. They are rare, but may well balance the name structure.

Arduina
Édua
Ilona
Damira

csillus · 09/08/2010 20:13

And if French, I like Élodie.

AngryPixie · 09/08/2010 20:18

Arden Grace (my favourite but biased)
Eliza Grace
Juliet Grace
Harriet Grace

hairymelons · 09/08/2010 20:22

Carmen

Thank you for the suggestions
I'm liking(from this page):

Carmen
Arden
Élodie
Eloise
Estelle
Marita

I need to ask DH though which is a massive hurdle...

We both quite like Gisele, any thoughts? Is it frilly? We would go for Gigi as a nn., its Frenglish, so fits there. We are both v v tall and slim (ok not so much at 35 wks lol) but would expect a gangly daughter!

oh and csillus , your suggestions are really interesting but I don't know how to say those names, please advise if you see my message. Thanks :)

Gigi is very showgirl, surely?! As is Carmen, I'd have thought. And in France at least (don't know about Canada) Gisele is very old-fashioned.

Eloise is much more elegant. French spelling Héloïse is pretty.

chocolatecheesecake · 10/08/2010 15:54

Emmeline? Similar to evangeline on your original list, and fits the franglais requirement

sedgiebaby · 10/08/2010 16:08

castille - yes I suppose Gigi is frilly, but I just mean for a little girls family nickname. The only Carmen I know was quite surly so I don't think of it as showgirl, but maybe. I like Héloïse.

I did know that about Gisele in France being like 'Ethel' here, that doesn't matter so much, but I can check with the Quebec relatives, to make sure it isn't too old lady-ish, the popularity of names in Quebec v France is quite different from what I've read online so far. However I dare not let too many things influence the choice though, its so difficult already.

Chocolatecheesecake, I like Emmeline too thank you.

How about Darcey or Myrtle?
Any good?

I also loved Artemisia (especially the nn Art) but DP was having none of it!
