Magnus? A Marmite name?

Initially I was quite stuck on Magnus, and introduced DP to the name...He is now hooked, to the point of not being able to consider any other boy's names!

Problem being that when I told my mother, she said "why would you do that to your child?"

I have now backed away from this name but DP won't budge...

What are your thoughts? Is Magnus going to be traumatised by his name?

I feel so confused now....

I love the name Magnus. My DH unfortunately doesn't, so not an option for us.

I think you have to go with your gut instint. It's probably quite an unusual but lovely choice IMO.

Everyone will have an opinion on any name you choose unfortunately. Depends how much that bothers you and if it really does then maybe you need to go with a 'safer' more popular name.

Good luck.

Not keen on Magnus. I prefer Maxwell (which is related to Magnus). Or how about Miles or Marius?

nowherewoman · 05/08/2010 00:35

I like Magnus and Marmite too

PaulineCampbellJones · 05/08/2010 07:00

It makes me think of strapping blonde Scandinavian men and that can't be a bad thing!
My parents openly scoffed at the name I chose for my DD as they didn't want her to have an Irish name. They were the only people I had told. If you like it don't let it put you off.

zippy539 · 05/08/2010 07:24

Love Magnus. And know a lovely eight-year old one. It's a great name.

it's a shame that your Mum doesn't like it but she had her shot at naming when she named you! If you go with it chances are she'll come to love it (because it will be attached to her grandchild!)

DinahRod · 05/08/2010 07:39

Love it, a great name.

My MIL has never liked any of my children's names initially because she doesn't know anyone with those names but now really likes them because they belong to her gc.

Go with a name you both love, you can't please everyone, nor should you try to.

NotQuiteCockney · 05/08/2010 08:01

I have a Magnus. We're very happy with the name. He's very happy with the name. (He's 8 )

It's more normal in Scotland from what I know, but we're in London.

ValiumSingleton · 05/08/2010 08:27

Magnus seems mainstream to me now. I mean, not in the top 50 probably, but I think in little pockets of London there might even be two in a class.

I really like it, but I bet you (haven't checked) that Marcus is more unusual than Magnus, could that be a compromise?

Colliecross · 05/08/2010 10:08

Like it.

Ineedsomesleep · 05/08/2010 10:14

Absolutely love the name but why did you tell your brother?

A close friend told her brother their name choice for DC2, brother took the piss and they gave DC2 a different name, now she really, really regrete letting her brother influence their decision.

Stick to MN for discussing name choices, thats my advice

Ineedsomesleep · 05/08/2010 10:32

Forgot to ask, if your brother is so as wonderful as he thinks with baby names, what are his DC called? If its Neville and Mervin (sorry to any Mums of Nevilles and Mervins out there) you can safely ignore all his comments

Only use Marmite in cooking btw, hate, hate, hate it.

Doozie · 05/08/2010 12:23

Love it, so does DH if we ever have a boy.

bobbygeorge · 05/08/2010 13:35

I think Magnus is a fab name.
My nephew has a very unusual name and when my SIL told us what they were calling him, we didn't like it (although we would never have said as much) now we think it fits him perfectly and we love it! Your mum will get used to it. If you love it, go for it!

hellymelly · 05/08/2010 13:40

I know a baby Magnus,(scottish parents)and I think it is a lovely name.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 05/08/2010 13:40

I like Magnus. It was our #2 choice for DS and he has it as a middle name (which may in retrospect have been a mistake, as we are struggling to agree on a name for hypothetical DS2).

SuseB · 05/08/2010 13:43

My DS is Marcus. His godfather is Magnus. They are both fab names!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 05/08/2010 13:46

Marcus is far more popular than Magnus -- in 2008 Marcus was the #127 boys' name in England and Wales, with 444 Marcuses born that year (plus 28 named Markus). Magnus was the #505 boys' name, with only 68 born in 2008.

ValiumSingleton · 05/08/2010 18:20

Well, I eat my words then! It's weird because I know a few Magnuses but no Marcuses at all.

Ineedsomesleep · 05/08/2010 19:30

Will have to learn not to post when the DC are driving me insane. Have just reread your post and realied it was your mother not your brother, sorry.

If it was my Mum it would just make me love the name even more.

When we told her what we had named our DD she said "I suppose you can't CHOOSE what they call your Grandchildren". Lovely!

Magnus is a fantastic name.

JeanLouiseFinch · 05/08/2010 21:00

I agree Magnus is a fab name.

getawiggleon · 05/08/2010 21:27

I dislike Marmite, LOVE Magnus!

Pasiphae · 06/08/2010 13:26

Fab name for me too.

iskra · 08/08/2010 10:28
