Bart? Really?

When I found out I was pregnant with a boy, DH and I agreed on names. I totally adored the name we picked out and to be honest, it was a relief as I didn't want to spend the entire 9 months fighting over names as we did with DS1, now 5.

However, a few weeks ago DH asked if we could give the child Bart as a middle name. I'm not at all keen on the name but I figured as it's only a middle name, it won't do any harm. Now though, DH is dead set on calling it Bart as a first name. I said no way but he keeps going on about it. I still offered Bart as a middle name but he refused saying that we were calling him Bart, end of.

We don't fight often so it must be a shock to DS1 who is now seeing us bickering. I'm not giving in to him but I just want peace! What to do?

Call him Bartholomew.

kiwidreamer · 03/08/2010 21:58

Yeah I'm not a fan, either as a first or middle name - good on you for being willing to compromise!

I'd not enter into anymore discussions until baby is crowing and then demand naming rights ;-)

mathanxiety · 04/08/2010 22:10

Stick to your guns. Bart has been taken over and killed by The Simpsons. You will never, ever escape references to Bart Simpson.

Barnaby or Barnabus or even Barney would be much better.

CouldOfWouldOfShouldOf · 04/08/2010 22:13

No, never.
Bartholemew as a middle name is OK, but never as a first name.
Bart Simpson has made it unusable.

llareggub · 04/08/2010 22:20

My DH has a friend called Bart. To us, he has never been a cartoon character. He's just DH's mate. Would you not call someone Thomas because of the Tank Engine?

LaundryLyne · 04/08/2010 23:45

I'm not keen on Bart. The nearest names I like are Arthur or Artemis (both with Art for short), Martin/Marty or Stuart.

There's always Slartibartfast.......

GladioliBuckets · 05/08/2010 07:42

Why not? DS2 would have been Maggie.
Would rather have a Bart than a Barney (speaking as a Simpsons fan.)

belgo · 05/08/2010 07:44

Your dh simply cannot overrule you on this.

You BOTH have to agree on a name, and having a name that you don't like as a middle name is compromise enough.

Your dh needs to understand you are the mother and he cannot choose the name without taking your feelings into account.

Kathleen123 · 05/08/2010 10:50

Barnabas is nice middle name. Find a compromise.

Kathleen123 · 05/08/2010 10:55

Please dont give him Barthomolew as a boys name, Barton would be better.

Remind your hubbie that you are carrying the child for nine months, and giving birth, and will not agree to a name you dislike for your child.

comtessa · 05/08/2010 11:05

Artemis is the name of a goddess in Greek mythology... Bartholemew is a nice name, agree that you would soon come to think of Bart as a person, as opposed to cartoon character. Any child named Peter gets Peter Rabbit things, Thomas gets train paraphernalia, it wears off! But if you just don't like the name, regardless, then DH will have to compromise. My DH wanted to call DC1 Henning if it was a boy, I really tried to get my head round it but in the end I couldn't, so we dropped that name.
Good luck!

Colliecross · 05/08/2010 11:06

I like Bart and Bartholomew. Thank you mrsvwoolf I have never known what Tolly was short for. Love the Lucy Boston books.

However, seems to me the point is the overuling attitude, rather than the name. "Calling him Bart. End of." makes me worry.

cockles · 05/08/2010 11:09

Tolly is short for Toseland in the Lucy Boston books, actually. I don't know if it has any other existence.

Raahh · 05/08/2010 11:12

Rhelove- what was the name you originally liked?

I agree not everyone makes the cartoon/tv prog connection any way- there are dozens of threads on here wanting Milo - and he's a Tweenie!(Ds's best friend is 7, and Milo- i admit I sniggered once- but he is just Ds's friend).

And Barton??? Barton Fink was a cartoon bat wasn't he? (Prob got that wrong....)

LaundryLyne · 05/08/2010 11:12

Artemis is a greek goddess but the name can also be used for boys. I was looking for names with the "art" sound that Bart has.

Raahh · 05/08/2010 11:15

D'oh (see what i did there?) Barton Fink was a film- but am thinking of Bat Fink...

(pg brain!).

ValiumSingleton · 05/08/2010 11:56

He can't say that to you "we are calling the baby Bart, end of." That's outrageous.

I don't mind the name Bart, but that is not the point. He sounds an ass.

Ineedsomesleep · 05/08/2010 13:03

I'd tell your DH when he has gone through nine months of pregnancy and then pushed out the baby he can call it what he likes, until then you at least have a say.

You are not his property or a vessel to bear his children.

Sorry but he sounds horrendous.

Firawla · 05/08/2010 16:39

Its not up to your dh to just impose a name that you do not even like! You were v reasonable to say okay lets have it as a mn. He is pushing his luck, extremely rude, inconsiderate and horrible behaviour. How can he overule the mother? I agree with the above - horrendous

Ibizadreams · 05/08/2010 16:48

Bart the fart!? Noooo tell your DH to do one!
