Our surname is one syllable and begins with R.

Dh and I both like the name Ruby, but had mixed reactions when asking friends. Ranging from lovely to sounds like the name of a naughty girl to sounds like a porn star!

We also like Lucy, I like Isabelle but dh prefers Isabella (would be shortened to Izzy either way, which we both really like)

what are your opinions?

We already have a 4yo called Tom btw. And if we have a boy he will be called Joel (up to now )

I think Ruby is ok but the fact that Eastenders has made it very widespread is a nio-no for me (see also: Alfie).

But you should choose the name you love.

I much prefer Lucy and Isabelle and think they're quite different to Ruby - Ruby is of the moment but Lucy is classic (as is Isabelle but very of the moment at the moment too).

Indont watch Eastenders so didn't know about that one so thank you. Indonsee what you mean about Isabelle too. Our ds would have been called Lucy had he been a girl and we still like it. Trouble is it now feels like a fall back name iyswim. Dh says I am daft for thinking that lol

I like Lucy, Isabelle and Isabella. Ruby is OK.

MummyLovesSadie · 01/08/2010 09:14

Who is Ruby in 'Enders???

I love the name & I wouldn't say it's a fad name, I have a Great Aunt Ruby.

There is nothing wrong with a bit of alliteration in a name, it makes it snappy & more memorable imo.

Oh & one last thing - don't tell your friends.... unless you want to be put off of every name you choose!!

moonminmama · 01/08/2010 09:55

MLS I think you may be right!

I don't watch Eastenders eiter, but I know there is/was a Ruby in it for some reason. Probably popular because of the song and I guess Charlotte Church's daughter put it on the radar a bit - that's why I think of it as fashionable for now, rather than timeless (although obv it's an old lady name too, which would also put me off!)

Lol I'm swaying to Isabel/ Isabelle now though. Ds just said it and hearing him say it out load was lovely... Not that I'm full of ridiculous hormones being 14 wks pg

I much prefer Lucy and Isabel/ Isobel (prefer these spellings) to Ruby.

SkintHeather · 01/08/2010 20:41

Ruby R could sound a bit like a cartoon character because of the alliteration (e.g. Roland Rat). You just don't know what character is going to appear on TV in a few years time when your child starts school.

I'd definitely go for a first name beginning with another letter. Isabelle / Isabella or Lucy sounds good though.
