What is the origin of Arlo? Everyone on this thread seems familiar with it but I've never, ever heard of it.

I think I prefer Arnauld, pronouned Arno. I know a lovely French boy called Arno.

skyeplusbump · 01/08/2010 22:56

spanish thanks but i DO love Arlo, and we live in hampshire,so i dont think it should be a problem to often!
dog i would struggle too! the only other boys name i love just doesnt seem like a 'useable' name if you know what i mean?!
you obviously have impecable taste though so im sure you'll come up with something lovely!

Arlo has several meanings/origins that i know of:

spanish: barberry tree
old english: fortified hill
italian: free man

quite an old name i think

My friend had a baby today and named him Arlo! Not really heard this name and then twice in one day! I think she named hers after Arlo Guthrie a folk singer

skyeplusbump · 01/08/2010 23:04

arnauld is nice though im pretty set on Arlo!

just got to figure that pesky middle name!

Apparently Rohan is also of Sanskrit (and Irish) origin meaning "ascending"

trixiechick · 01/08/2010 23:52

Arlo Edward is perfect great combo of the unusual with the traditional. Good name hunting, I'm impressed

skyeplusbump · 02/08/2010 08:55

laundrylyne oohhh i like that! my other grandmother was irish too...nice searching, thanks!

trixiechick why,thankyou very much!
((ego swells))

Arlo Edward

Much prefer Isla and Beatrix to Elsie and Ivy.

Ailsa is nice but then you would have two scottish islands which would be a bit twee.

skyeplusbump · 02/08/2010 09:38

i like iona too...must stop with the scottish islands!!as they also have a cousin...lewis!!

Hi there, sounds nice but I would add to the note of concern already sounded about Arlo sounding like Harlow, as that's how it gets pronounced there!

thumbwitch · 02/08/2010 09:45

Like many others, I prefer Arlo Edward of your boy names.

I also do not think Elsie and Isla go together, they are too similar. Beatrice is nicer than Beatrix, IMO; Ivy is lovely but so is Iris (had you considered that option?) which, as well as a flower, also means rainbow, so would go beautifully with Sky.

skyeplusbump · 02/08/2010 09:48

ohhh i do like that thumbwitch i hadnt considered iris at all...

Lionstar · 02/08/2010 12:19

skye, funny you should mention Hampshire, that's where we are too. Maybe Arlo is about to get very popular around here!

If the similarity to Harlow is the only negative thing about the name then I think that puts it way ahead of lots of other names out there for teasing potential

skyeplusbump · 02/08/2010 13:49

ohhh,if i ever hear someone shouting Arlo in the playground,im going to think it's you now!!
my thoughts exactly lionstar (about the teasing)

Chunkamatic · 02/08/2010 14:47

Have to say I'm with Thumbwitch - Iris is a lovely alternative to Ivy.

Manda25 · 02/08/2010 15:59

If your daughter has 2 middle names how about Arlo Rupin Edward ?? Like all the names btw except for Ivy

skyeplusbump · 02/08/2010 20:45

ummm, i do like the idea of not having to choose between them...

but im not sure it flows well,or maybe there are to many sylables?

...maybe im being to picky...

Honeywitch · 02/08/2010 20:46

All those names are gorgeous!!!! And they sound really good togther!

steph1512 · 02/08/2010 20:54

I like beatrix i have a friend whos dd is called beatrix and trixie for short.

Not sure about Ivy and Sky tbh just my opinion.

Elsie was on my shortlist along with Elsa

skyeplusbump · 02/08/2010 20:54
