Now, it's not the worst name I've ever heard but it's still quite bad. Should I try and talk her out of it or just let him grow up to be a grumpy teen with the NN "Jolly"? WDYT?

I think it's a lovely name. Classic but unusual enough to be not heard every day. IMHO it's far far better than Oscar/Sam/Jack & all of the other boring every day names.

Surely people would shorten it to Joly, not Jolly?

wisteria12 · 30/07/2010 18:55

Well, still, they sound the same. Like I say, I'm not totally offended by it, you only have to see my DC's names to see that, but I do feel it's just so...jolly.

Seriously? You are so up yourself that you think that your opinion (and let's ne clear, it is simply personal preference we are talking about here) is more valid than your own sister's when it comes to naming her own baby?

Farrrrking hell.

Beak out.

deaddei · 30/07/2010 19:00

I don't like it but it's her choice.
It's a sort of Evelyn Waugh novel type name, like Algernon or Cuthbert.

LaundryLyne · 30/07/2010 19:01

It's up to your sister. Maybe she doesn't plan to use Jolly as a nickname?

Personally I'm not a fan of Jolyon, I prefer Julian or Julius.

DinahRod · 30/07/2010 19:04

It's very Agatha Christie country house - like it!

freerangeeggs · 30/07/2010 19:05

It's fine. I mean, I wouldn't recommend it for a child in Govan but a Jolyon wouldn't be out of place at the school I work in now (S London). It's quite nice, really - not something I would choose but I can appreciate it's a handsome name.

Don't try to talk her out of it. Unless you live in Govan.

Jojay · 30/07/2010 21:34

I knew a Jolyon - perfectly nice name, and he can always use the nickname Jo if he wants to.

And with all the little Joseph's around now, there will be plenty of them

KaraTrace · 30/07/2010 21:37

I know one and he is gorgeous. I think it is a fab name and Joly is pronounced Jolie as in Angelina Jolie not Jolly, at least the little boy I know is.

Helokitty · 30/07/2010 21:53

I love it. Great name.

Of course, in the Forsyte Saga, they are all Jolyon's and they all have a variety of different shortenings - Jo, Joly, Jon.... (can't remember any more - too much wine )

Mumcentreplus · 30/07/2010 22:00

imo its naf!sounds like a name for a dodgy man-made fabric but its an opinion...my Sister named her son Dallion I didn't like it ..but its her son..

Tinykins · 30/07/2010 22:02

It's bloody dreadful!

WinkyWinkola · 30/07/2010 22:29

Sounds like a used car salesman and will always remind me of this character from Tintin

ValiumSingleton · 30/07/2010 22:30

Galsworthy novel..Forsyte Saga fan?.

rachel234 · 30/07/2010 22:45

I think it's lovely. Nice classic name that won't date like Jack/Sam/Alfie names will. Jo or Joly are great nicknames.

Why don't you just let your sister choose a name she and her dh love? It is their child, after all.

Rockbird · 30/07/2010 22:46

DH's uncle is Jolyon, always known as Joly (pronounced ]olly). He really suits it, it's a great name.

Rockbird · 30/07/2010 22:47

They're v v posh btw if that helps

LJS666 · 30/07/2010 23:06

Forsyte Saga - nn is Jolly. Great name, especially if you are at Eton. Julian might be better?

wisteria12 · 30/07/2010 23:31

Well interesting opinions/aggressions, thanks all. She's gone off it now anyway. I didn't even say anything. Apparently she got wind of the Jolyon Wagg connection and now thinks it's too "rah".
