Hi everyone, new to Mumsnet, really is everything that everyone says its is on the net and in the press - what a wonderful site for parents, have a ds (think im using the correct vocabulary!) he was born End of June and we still havent decided on a proper name for him! Now we only have 1 week left to register the birth and name! and we are still lost - My husband was determined to call him Jai - meaning victorious - which i was happy with as it fits in with our heritage (we are both sikh but not overly religious or anythng!)but we are both thinking that its too short and it seems to be cropping up everywhere now (emmerdale/hollyoaks) and hitting top 100 lists everywhere.

My husband also texted everone his name when he was born which i wish he hadnt as now everyone knows him as jai but when asked we say - "its not definite yet" we are just both looking more and more foolish everyday and making our ds part of this stupidness! Even worse is when dr's/mwives/nurses ask and we say "he doesnt have a name yet".... although we are both asian (indian) we live in a very caucasian area and are the only coloured/asian people in the whole town (almost!) so need a name that is not your usual hard to pronounce/picked on at school name but yet still maintains his identity so he has a sense of belonging when he grows older....

So....finally... most asian people (sikh anyway) add Deep/pal/jit/inder/bir/man/ etc to the end of their names so for eg it would be Jaideep/Jaipal/Jaijit etc - they are all interchangeable -

We want to add something to the end that goes with Jai but doesnt neccessarily have to be asian/have a meaning just needs to sound good!

My husband has thought of Jaiveer - which is also a common suffix but not as common as the ones above and also means Brave (veer - brave) there was also a big bollywood blockbuster that hit the top 10 here in the uk and around the world called "Veer" about a chap named Veer - who was the eponomous Hero of the film.

So its going to be Jaiveer but i really want something more adrogenous/universal - Any idead -

Jai "what"?

We have also thought of Jairavan, Jaivaran and Jaivani (Vani - mean lords voice/gods sound) but am worried it sounds to feminine for a Boy? and to much like the italian Giovanni!

PLEASE HELP! NO LOL! this is starting to cause stress! much love and hope everyone is well with their children xxx

thanks mildmannerjanitor - it is lovely you are right but its too common - we are both determined that he has a unique name - my husband was quite partial to Jaivani - he likes it a lot but lots of his butch macho male friends have said its sounds like a girls name - we hope he becomes a doctor or (good) politician so that he can help ppl and care for ppl the way his father does - Prime Minister Jaivani Dhillon (our surname) Dr Javano Dhillon? lol? would you think it was a girl or a boy? Glad you think its not feminine thats one in the plus box Thanks xxx

Another vote for Jaivani. Sounds strong and masculine to my ears. Jai would a lovely nickname.

Hve posted on your other thread.

Jaivani is lovely as is Jai.

FranSanDisco · 29/07/2010 15:33

Jaivani isn't too feminine. It's lovely

littledawley · 29/07/2010 15:38

I like Jaiveer and Jaivani - would personally think of them both as very masculine.
Don't worry too much about being unique - your boy himself is unique and he will make himself stand out without his name. If you think about many politicians, David, Gordon, Nick, William, Michael, Gordon - they're not exactly unusual names are they?

ViveLaFrak · 29/07/2010 15:40

Jaivani is lovely but you're right, if I heard it I might think I'd misheard Giovanni. Jaivaran sounds good and not as similar to Giovanni, but on balance I probably prefer Jaivani!

Jairavan doesn't sound as good to my ear as the others!

LaundryLyne · 29/07/2010 15:53

I like Jaiveer and Javano. How about Jaime or Jairome?

Beral · 29/07/2010 15:53

Hi, How about Jaimes?

arsesandoldlace · 29/07/2010 15:57

Another for Jaivani, I think it's a strong sounding name.

Kiran23 · 29/07/2010 15:59

Hiya, thx all for the feedback ~kisses~ i wasnt trying to box him in a category just trying to sound the name out Barack Obama - need we say more lol... but yes most politicians have very orthodox names Boris is probbably the most unorthodox but if ever a character was his name its boris johnson - or BoJo, great foresight by his folks lol, Jairome has a nice ring to it but its a different take on Jerome? Jaime i love but think most people will just call him jamie and not jai as they are 2 completely different pronouciations - So far its Jaivani? Jaivaran nickname could be Jai or aran - like aaron its said the same? Thanks guys xx

Jaivani is a beautiful name! I don't think it's too feminine at all - besides, I think slightly more androgynous names for boys are becoming more commonplace (Luca, Ezra etc).

Javano is a cool name. I think it's less of a doctor's or politician's name - it sounds more like a cool artist or designer. Javano Dhillon. I love it!

What about Jaivir, spelled like this?

Rockbird · 30/07/2010 09:53

Love the name Jai and another thumbs up for Jaivani.

CreepyFunbags · 30/07/2010 11:46

Jairavan sounds like caravan! The others are all quite nice.
