What are people's thoughts on Millie? What associations does the name have? What kind of boy's names would it go with?

Asking on behalf of a friend. Thanks!

I do find it strange that a name can be both 'old lady' and too babyish at the same time. Apart from my own, the only other Millie's I know are well into their 70's!

Poor girl??

Raahh · 31/07/2010 19:57

There are some quite strong opinions, considering it is really quite an old, established and really inoffensive name. We aren't discussing Chardonnay here.

And Millicent actually come from the Old French/Norman (originally Melisende- Melissa also comes from this) and means strong , industrious.

Definitely sums up DD! (as does does bossy....)

We were thinking of calling our DD Millie and we don't really love love any full name that goes with it - ie Amelia, Millicent etc. The only one comes close to one we love is Milla.

Should we give our DD a full name, just for the sake of having a full name, as some people think it is too cutsie to be a grown up name? How will Millie sound in the board room for instance?

Really love your thoughts?

Pasiphae · 09/08/2010 12:17

It's very much a safe name.
Middle of the road, no issue at all, and as such a bit boring maybe...

NiceCuppaT · 09/08/2010 12:40

I like it, and as for being a grown up girls name well it's been around for decades, and will stand up just as well as the Molly, Lily, Evie, Betty and Lola's that'll all be in the boardroom/government/surgery at the same time!

violethill · 09/08/2010 12:45

It's a bit dull and too nicknamey.
Amelia, Emily, Emilia, Millicent,Camilla, Camille, could all have Millie as a nn but would mean there was a 'grown up' alternative

KERALA1 · 09/08/2010 14:04

Fine as a nickname for a small child. How can it work on an adult? Doesnt seem right somehow.

Iklboo · 09/08/2010 14:11

Please don't take this the wrong way but I had a pet rat called Millie. She was the best, most fantastic pet rat in the world and every time I hear the name I think of her and it makes me feel a little bit happy and a little bit sad too.

lill72 · 10/08/2010 12:01

Hmmmm, hard to decide whether to have a 'grown up' name when we really don't love any of them. I do know a Millie around 40 and have never thought of her name as babyish.

Millie as a name is far less commonplace in Australia (where I'm from) than in the UK, so I guess we see it a little differently.

NiceCuppaT - I laughed at your response as I was thinking I was thinking about how it would sound in a boardroom - and your response is exactly what my DH said!

The pondering continues... it's a big decision!!

pacinofan · 10/08/2010 12:28

Millicent - love

Millie - not so keen.

muminthemiddle · 11/08/2010 10:51

I don't like it, can't explain why x

MrsFC · 12/08/2010 13:57

DC2 due in Jan, Millie is definitely one of our favourite girls names. I'm 5'10" and MrFC is 6'4", so we know if it is a girl, she'll be quite a sturdy thing...! I thought Millie was the complete opposite of girly, very solid.

It would be short for Amelia. DS1 is called Sam. I have a very unusual name and it drives me crazy. I like the simplicity of them both.

When I was a kid, I loved the name Millie. I used it for all my teddies and swore I would use it for my first girl.

Then when I got school, there was a Miie and the boys would shout "Millie has an itchy willy!" Sort of put me off, haha.
