How much input did you let your other DCs have in naming babies?

I have 2 DDs (5 and 3 and a half) and a DS (nearly 2) - and I'd (sort of) like them them to have some involvement in naming DC4 (well maybe not DS, as he's a bit young).

The only thing is - their choices are a bit random. So far, DD1 has suggested Alana for a girl, or Oliver for a boy (can't say I'm all that keen on either) and DD2 has suggested Emily for a boy or a girl (it's her favourite name - she has 3 dolls and a rabbit called Emily).

So I was just wondering if any of you took on board suggestions from your DCs? Did any of you actually use any of the names they liked?

None at all.

Funnily enough, my dds suggested Emily as well.

I let my son choose the middle name for my daughter from a selection of pre chosen names. He had some input but not total deciding power. My son was seven years old at the time so had a fair bit of sense.

With three children there is no way that you can please them, you and your husband. Ulimtately you and your husband have to make the final decision.

LuluF · 26/07/2010 09:20

Yes - but DH is absolutely no use at all!

None at all. DD1 was desperate to call DD3 Susie (the name of the baby in a book we'd got her about new babies in the family) and DH and I were definitely not keen. DD2 wanted something random - I can't remember exactly what but it wasn't even a 'proper' name! It might have been 'Hamster'..... They were only 4.5 and 2.5 though. DH and I chose the name, and told the DDs before we told anyone else. They did get to help choose other things for the baby, just not her name.

grumpypants · 26/07/2010 09:23

Non at all. We sort of put it to them, but ds3 d now be called Dude Sunbeam Tweenie had we gone ahead.

chimchar · 26/07/2010 09:23

errrr. no!

my dc wanted to call our new baby all kinds of thiongs, from bob to ariel to peppa to thomas (as in tank!) to minnie (as in mouse)

it changed on a daily basis.

we did tell them the final boy and girl names we'd chosen, and talked them into how great they were!

LuluF · 26/07/2010 09:33

I thought perhaps more people did it than I realised.

My cousin named his sister - he was 5 and picked a really lovely, traditional name so it worked well. Maybe if he'd picked Peppa - it might've been a different matter though.

I've mentioned before that we like the name Patrick for a boy. But apparently this is really funny to my 5 year old. I'm assuming it's because she has a cousin called Patrick. Either way, I wasn't really expecting that reaction!

A friend let her DD1 choose DD2's name. She chose Phoebe, so they went with it. I wouldn't have been so sure. My boys would probably pick Thomas (as in Tank) if we asked them what we should call their (hypothetical) younger sibling.

twolittlemonkeys · 26/07/2010 09:44

I meant I wouldn't have been so sure my child could pick a sensible name (friend's DD1 was 3 at the time), didn't mean I thought Phoebe was a bad choice! Should have reread my post before posting!

WickedWitchSouthWest · 26/07/2010 09:45

None at all I'm afraid! We did ask dd (age 4) and her suggestions were Snow White, Flower or Heart . She wouldn't entertain the thought of a baby brother so no boys names, so when ds arrived I was pretty pleased not to have to explain why we weren't using any of her favourites!

nickytwotimes · 26/07/2010 09:49

none, but then the names he suggested were 'Shrek' or Princess Fiona' for a girl.

We went for Adam instead.

5yearsto40bob · 26/07/2010 09:50

We let ds1 (3) be involved, we'd give him the baby name book and he'd point to a name, we'd read it out and he'd say yes or no and that's about as far as it went!

He wanted to call the baby egg fried rice, we decided not to use it as it didn't really go with our surname

waitingforbedtime · 26/07/2010 09:54

Ds would like this one to be called Spiderman so I think I might not involve him at all really.

BettyButterknife · 26/07/2010 09:56

No chance! He suggested either his own name, or Postman Pat. DS was 3 yesterday, which might explain it.

We did run the name we like past him and he started crying. So we haven't mentioned it since!

waitingforbedtime · 26/07/2010 09:56

My sister chose my name though, she was 7.

Lancelottie · 26/07/2010 09:59

Our boys picked DD's middle name, and then told everyone at playgroup it was her first name, so we spent a couple of weeks telling bemused people that Lucy was fine, thanks, but her name was actually Catherine... (so to speak)

alexisfaith · 26/07/2010 10:25

My grandparents decided to allow their little boy to name his newborn sister (my mum) but, unfortunately, they decided not to go with his choice, 'My Sweetest Little Rosebud'. Aww!

ludog · 26/07/2010 10:33

DD1 actually came up with dd3's name (Cara). We had briefly considered it for dd2 but decided not. However it seemed to suit dd3 for some reason!

Kathleen123 · 26/07/2010 10:34

My mum and aunt named their youngest sister. Granny and Grandad chose a name which their other daughters (aged 7 and 5) didnt like. After about a week of using both names, my mum and aunt won.

The name they chose suits my youngest aunt.

mamatomany · 26/07/2010 10:39

None they wanted Oliver or Ben, he's neither they get to name their own children not mine.

Giddyup · 26/07/2010 10:40

DS (7) will have none as apart from the stunning suggestion of "Lional" all his suggestions have revolved around footballers. We have had Fernando and Edaurdo (sp?).
ex did go with DS's suggestion of Theo, although he omitted the middle names of "Walcott" and "Number 14"...

LimaCharlie · 26/07/2010 10:41

DS (6 when she was born) picked one of DDs middle names, however it is a safe traditional name and we knew he would pick it as it is his worshipped and adored grandmothers name so we were on to a safe bet

arsesandoldlace · 26/07/2010 10:53

at some of these!

Yesterday I was solemnly informed that we would be having a baby boy 'from your tummy, and he will be called Jacob'.

I'm not even pregnant or ttc. DD (3) also has a girls name picked out. Unfortunately it's also her name.

PowderMum · 26/07/2010 20:49

DD1 was just 2.6 when DD2 was born, we had 2 girls names just hadn't decided the order. When she came to the hospital with PIL she came into the room just with DH to meet her sister for the first time (we were all convinced it was going to be a boy) and chose her name from the shortlist of 2.
