hmmm what do you think?

I really like the idea of naming dc5 katherine if its a girl, then seeing which shortened version suits her as she grows up, whilst giving her the option of using any of the above as she grows older.

And katherine doesnt sound too bad shouted across the park does it?

I have a little Katherine. I chose it with Kate/Katie/Kathy in mind, but at 12 months now she really suits it and will be Katherine until she's old enough to choose a nn or not for herself.

I still love it and would call her it all over again.

ALWAYS give long name and then option to change

LJS666 · 27/07/2010 22:07

Love Catherine, with Cathy as a NN "Wuthering Heights"

qumquat · 28/07/2010 13:09

I love Katherine, my best friend has always used it in its full form an I like that better than any of the shortenings.

Kate is top of our girl's list, but just Kate...I'm not keen on any longer versions and hate Katy and Kitty

Chamomile · 29/07/2010 18:59

Katrina's rather lovely too and fits with kate, Kitty etc.

TattyCatty · 29/07/2010 19:09

I'm a Catherine and in all my 38 years have always, always liked my name. Slightly biased obviously, but I think it's one of the few truly timeless names that suits any age.

My DD is Katherine. She is 3, and the only Katherine I know, although on Mumsnet I see more and more posts about this name on here.

We used to shorten it to Kay or Katie, but DD wants to be called Kitty, so she is known as that now, although I suspect she'll choose something more grown up when she is older. Kitty is very much a little girl's name. It suits her now, mind.

It is a lovely name, and gives them so many options.

Helokitty · 01/08/2010 13:06

Sorry, only child called Katherine that I know.

LexieKJ · 01/08/2010 13:18

Katherine/Catherine are family names with us. We generally use them as middle names (or there would be so many of them with the Christian name!). It's a lovely name though, and as you point out, you can do so much with it by way of nicknames.

EricNorthmansmistress · 01/08/2010 19:33

I'm Katherine, known as Katherine - occasionally Kat. I love it, classic but not boring. Go for it!

sparkle12mar08 · 01/08/2010 21:50

I'm a Kathryn Louise (just to through that spelling into the mix!), and have been called Katy Lou, Katy and Kate through the years. It's a brilliant classic name that you can shorten any which way and still sounds good. I probably wouldn't use my spelling on a child though (verrry 70's!), I do prefer Katherine, I think.

sodacrystal · 01/08/2010 21:57

Lovely lovely name,so grown-up and elegant sounding. My friend spells it Katharine though - she says it's after Ms Hepburn, don't know if that's right though.

EricNorthmansmistress · 01/08/2010 22:16

Sparkle born in 1980 by any chance? I'm Katherine Louise too!

sparkle12mar08 · 02/08/2010 07:42

Nah, firmly a child of the seventies me. The 'ryn' spelling was particularly popular during that decade, and Louise as a middle name was tacked on to everything it seems
