Rohan for a boy: mad or genius?

Rohan ticks a lot of our boxes, as we want something a little bit unusual and are also quite partial to Indian names as I am of Indian heritage. But DH isn't as keen as I am... any thoughts? You can be honest, I have thick skin.

Thanks!

I know one half-Indian boy called Rohan too, I think it's lovely (and sounds rather international than Indian to me)

minimonkeytoes · 26/07/2010 21:43

My 8 month old son is called Rohan. We pronounce him as Roan, as in the colour. We selected it from the Irish meaning as we are all redheads!(My 3yr old sons name is Flynn - also redhead meaning). Everyone comments that Rohan is a great name and spelling for a boy.

I know two Rohans - one child, Indian parents, pronounced Ro-han, and one adult, English heritage, pronounced Ro-wan. Nice name, suits both!

I like it!

I know one (Ro-han) and I love it.

Aims80 · 29/07/2010 15:05

Does remind me of lord of the rings a lot!

Cakey0207 · 29/07/2010 15:09

Love it too!

Rohan is a very old name with both Sanskrit/Hindi and Irish/Gaelic origins, the Sanskrit meaning is "one who takes the higher path" or " one who rises, ascends or achieves great heights." Note that Sanskrit is considered to be one of the oldest languages in the world (though like Latin no longer spoken) if not arguably, the oldest.

The Indian version is pronounced with the H.

It did not originate with the Lord of the Rings or become popular because of a clothing store brand. Do your research people!

Anaya, very odd to resurrect an old thread just to tell people they're pronouncing it wrong Confused

ashesandfire · 10/06/2014 19:00

I love it, I prefer the spelling Rowan though. One of those few unisex names I really like
