Here's the shortlist of baby names I'm considering that I generated with Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder. Let me know what you think.

Boys
Alexander
Barnaby

I really like Alexander, and quite like Barnaby.

Barnaby is a great name, and Barney is a good shortening.

Alexander is good, but it will probably end up being called Alex which is less ... grr. Unless it's Lex, or Xander. In a kind of tortured megalomaniac/vampire slaying sidekick vibe. Neither of which are bad.

Prefer Barnaby.

Barnaby is probably the more unusual. I really like them both.

I've never met a Barnaby. Met a Barnabas, but he goes by Barney.

Kathleen123 · 20/07/2010 21:22

The Barnabas I know parents are of Jewish origin, but I dont think they are practising Jews.

Barnabas may be a Jewish name. I personally love the name, but don't think it'd suit a child of mine (I think its rather too posh for us).

Saint Barnabas or Barnabus was a first century missionary colleague of St. Paul. Barnaby is a variant of the name, more common than Barnabas in the UK.

My DS1 is a Barnaby - he is 20 months and we have not met another Barnaby yet. We get a lot of comments on the name (good comments that is) and when we shorten it we shorten to "Barnes"

We have a small problem however as dc2 expected in 4 months and no boys name we like as much that we think goes with Barnaby - so bear that in mind
