I know it's been done before but I'd like an update of which are the most popular (that you would actually use, or have used) just girls at the mo...

TIA

Old names (some GPs and GGPs and some much older) in my family are:

Gwendoline
Aurelia
Medina
Zoe
Emmeline
Sarah
Cordelia
Harriet
Jemima
Lavinia
Mahala
Tryphena
Rosina
Tabitha

And in DH's family:
Violet
Molly
Vivienne

Considered many of these for DC2, finally plumping for Aurelia.
Don't think any of them are popular.

tummytickler- I was interested to know your definition of 'trendy' as I think it might be different to mine. Do you mean that Martha/ Matilda are trendy because of their rapid increase in popularity recently? I find it difficult to call these sort of names trendy as they have been used for 100s/ 1000s of years and will go in and out of fashion.

Old lady names are definitely a trend at the moment so I suppose they called all be called trendy.

I would personally call Jayden/ Brayden/ Kylie, etc more 'trendy' names as they will only be used by one generation and then will (v likely) disappear.
Trendy to me means that people are being deliberately conscious of the fashion at the time. I doubt that this happens with naming in the same way that it does with clothing- i think most people just choose a name that they like!

I love Plum.

A friend of a friend calls her daughter Plum (it is short for Victoria). The little girl is soooo cute, a real Tomboy, tree climbing, cute as a button kind of girl.

I think Queenie is too brave though.
The poor girl has to go to school.

Easywriter · 19/07/2010 10:28

CakeandRoses some seriously beautiful names in your list.

Easywriter · 19/07/2010 10:32

... in fact (i've just read the thread) this is simply a list of gorgeous names.

I hope anyone who's preggers out there is feeling inspired.

CakeandRoses · 19/07/2010 10:58

Thank you easywriter They certainly gave us food for thought when choosing names!

DD is Millicent (Millie), so old lady/ twee/girly at the same time!

My gran was Florence (love this, but dh doesn't like Flo)
My great gran was Harriet, gain one of my favourite - but have an Elliot, so not great together
Her sisters were Alice and Lillian- both fab names (my niece is Alice Lily).

My mother, however, is Doreen. As is her mother's. I do not see that as a nice old lady name, and neither of them would be offended if it didn't suddenly make a come back!

Raahh · 19/07/2010 11:14

I fact , all the really lovely names come from my dad's side (great-great granny was Eliza).

Names on my mums side, not so hot!

MarkStretch · 19/07/2010 11:17

I know a Blanche and she is 9.

LOVE Agatha.

My very old relations are named:
Oonagh, Adelaide, Merriel, Doris (Dotty), Irene (Renee), Elsie (short for Elisheva), Myrtle, Cora, Ida. I love Agatha - or the version Agata (Polish-style). Would use if I ever were to sprog again....

Colliecross · 19/07/2010 13:00

My own Great-aunt names:
Rose
Florence (Flossie)
Maud
Caroline (Cal)
Clytemnestra (!-called Clytie)
Cicely
Kathleen
Bridget

I can't see Clytemnestra making a come-back.

Pasiphae · 19/07/2010 14:05

I so love Mabel!
Other ones I love:
Hortensia and Prunella. Myrtle,Minerva, Ada, , Pearl and Greta. Simone, Vivienne and Marguerite are cool too.
And a huge soft spot for Philomene/Philomena.

Colliecross · 19/07/2010 15:05

I like Philomena too, and Philathea.
Vivi would be pretty too.

luth · 19/07/2010 15:55

My parents were going to call me Lettice (a medieval name) right up until I was born and then they chickened out and called me Lucy (a popular victorian name) instead. Although I like Lucy I wish they would have been braver as I love Lettice and my mum still calls me Lettice now!!

My wonderful spirited nana (94 and still going strong) is called Ellen Cecilia and we're going to have Cecilia as a middle name for Primrose (which I consider an old fashioned name) or Rosie - depending on the vote on the other thread I posted today!

BridesheadRegardless · 19/07/2010 16:00

strandedatsea · 20/07/2010 20:02

Prudence/Prue?

teameric · 20/07/2010 20:26

I love
Florence
Mabel
Ivy
Iris
Olive
Violet
Betty
Betsy
Gertrude (Gertie)
Unfortunately DH hates all of them and thinks I have bad taste in names

Ineedsomesleep · 20/07/2010 21:41

Teameric, don't listen to your DH, you have great taste in girl's names.

Though I think the character Violet is about to make a return to Corrie so the name might see a rise in popularity.

katiepotatie · 20/07/2010 21:45

Elsie I love dh wasn't keen though. Think it is as popular as the name we picked now

CreepyFunbags · 21/07/2010 08:30

I like Dolly, Joan, Mavis. Off the top of my head!
