Violette and other names that don't end in 'a'.

I quite like Violette for a girl. Is that spelling ok?

Looking for a girls name that doesn't end in 'a'. Quite like:

Irene (thinking 'European chic' rather than permed older lady)!
Imogen
Carine
Jennifer (a bit dull)?
Joan (I know it's an old lady name, but could be cool)?
Mathilde (not sure of spelling)
Evangeline
Adelaide/Adeline
Madeleine
Caroline
Jacqueline (although will this inevitably be Jackie)? I think this is a lovely name and maybe due a revival? Maybe not quite yet though.

Not keen on Juliet/Juliette, Mary or Marie.

I prefer Violet. But best on your list is Joan.
how about
Ottilie
Mabel
Meredith
Jean
Sally
Maude

Imogen gets my vote with Madeleine a close second. Don't like Caroline and Mathilde would probably end up as Matilda so you'd have your "a" at the end

SE13Mummy · 16/07/2010 12:22

I also prefer Violet.

Imogen and Madeleine are the others I like from your list. How about Rachel, Hannah, Harriet, Sophie, Miriam, Iris or Alice?

Hedwig3 · 16/07/2010 12:33

I would pronounce Violette differently to Violet.

I like Violet and
Irene
Joan
Evangeline from your list

I'm a Violet, I like it now but when I was younger it was very unpopular and I hated it. I think it's lovely now I am older and it seems to be more used now.

I don't like it spelled Violette though, looks like you'd need to prounounce it in a french accent to me!

I love Rachael and Kate from Mrs Badgers list.

Pasiphae · 16/07/2010 13:52

I love Adelaide. It dances on the tongue.
Violette is cool too.
Evangeline is sweet.

I find the others too old, but not dusty enough to be retro, or old lady chic.

Celimene, Celine, Cécile, Ismene, Hermione, Adelie, Floriane, Vivien, Sidonie, Margaux, Marjolaine, Amadine, Salomé, Cicely, Astrid?

PuppyMonkey · 16/07/2010 13:55

I would pronounce Violette "Vee-oh-let" not like Violet. Quite like both. I have a Madeleine.

Irayne - Eye-Ray-Knee is a bit less Bingo-playing-old-lady than Irene.

creequealley · 16/07/2010 14:07

What about Delphine or Celeste?

BridesheadRegardless · 16/07/2010 14:15

Caroline is gorgeous. Classy and underused.

Kate is simple and timeless.

Adelaide is rather lovely too bt I'd fear many shortenings and the full name not really being used.

I rather like Jane myself. Elegantly simplistic rather like Kate.

Or, Agnes, I love this.

TigerFeet · 16/07/2010 15:11

Elspeth

superpenguin · 16/07/2010 15:14

I like Violet (not Violette unless you are french) and also like Imogen best from your list.

Madeliene sounds like a cake.

MrsJohnDeere · 16/07/2010 15:15

Joy
Fleur

fwiw I much prefer Violet to Violette.

MunchMummy · 16/07/2010 15:21

I know a Violette - lovely name, but the mother IS french.

What about Hazel, I have a Madeleine as well. One nut and one cake

saucetastic · 16/07/2010 15:31

Without hearing it beforehand, i'd pronounce it Vee-oh-Let-uh. Which i think is very pretty.

I love all your other names also, particularly Adelaide/Adeline.

Lionstar · 16/07/2010 15:35
