Nancy or Saskia?

I can't decide between these, it has to be right because we've decided against a middle name.

Which do you think and why?

Nancy means gay hereabouts?
Agree though that Saskia is trying a bit hard (sorry)

Too hard to impress - sorry, just my impression.

Well at least I didn't say it is poncey. (phew!)

How is poncey good? I must have misunderstood the meaning then.Somehow thought it meant pretentious, but happy to be put right.

gagamama · 16/07/2010 16:04

I really like both, but for some reason they both conjure up East End murders in my mind! Nancy makes me think of Bill Skyes (not sure if he was a murderer per se), and Saskia reminds me of the character in EastEnders who was finished off with an ashtray by the bloke from Spandau Ballet.

That said, I like both names, but I think Nancy has the edge. Saskia would sound horrible if she had a lisp.

LuluF · 16/07/2010 17:12

Colliecross - Yes Nancy means gay here, too when applied to a man, though - but it's a bit old fashioned and fortunately none of my friends appear to be bigotted.

gagamama - there are lots of Nancys - Nancy Mitford, Nancy Drew, Nancy Regan, Nancy Sinatra and many more - as well as poor unfortunate Nancy from Oliver Twist (was Bill Sykes a murderer or wife beater? Not sure it really makes a difference to poor Nancy!!). There used to be a daytime tv programme I used to watch with my Grandma in the summer holidays - called 'Painting With Nancy' with a lady called Nancy Kominsky - I loved it and I think that's really why I picked the name.

Colliecross · 16/07/2010 17:17

How is it bigoted to know the connotations of a name?

I like the name Nancy very much myself; I always think of the pirate-playing tomboy of Swallows and Amazons.

SkiHorseWonAWean · 16/07/2010 17:51

Can't choose - they're both lovely!

LuluF · 16/07/2010 17:59

Obviously it's not bigotted to know the connotations of anything - but I was stating that none of my friends would use a term like that to describe someone who is gay. The use of the term, I feel, is not exactly politically correct. Or is that just me?

From your post, I for one, would never have been able to tell that you liked the name very much - it sounded to me that your views on it were quite the opposite.

notso · 16/07/2010 18:12

I love Nancy, it may be on my short list this time.

I like Saskia but it feels a bit dated.

Nancy is nice, but does also make me think of the 1980s Nurse Nancy from Twinkle magazine.

Agree that Saskia feels a bit too try hard.

Nancy would get my vote.

I dont feel Saskia is trying too hard, dont really get that... trying hard to impress ? er to impress who exactly, its just a name like any other. having said that i prefer Namcy

momino · 16/07/2010 22:32

ok, i'm biased.

our dd2 is saskia simply because there was a girl in my highschool called saskia and I always thought it was a beautiful name. dd2 is totally a saskia as well! (whatever that means?)

Nancy is nice, but not my preference. a bit 70s and Nancy Drew, Nancy Reagan come to mind. nice but not a name I'd want to use.

baskingseals · 16/07/2010 22:58

love Saskia, it's a really pretty name, have to say i prefer it to Nancy.

Firawla · 16/07/2010 23:15

saskia is beautiful
nancy is cute but as someone said more jokey

mopsyflopsy · 17/07/2010 10:16

Both lovely names, although I personally find Saskia more feminine/elegant. Does your surname work better with either Saskia or Nancy?

I really struggle to understand how any parent can 'try TOO hard' to name their baby . We should indeed try very, very hard to find the right name!!!

zenoushka · 17/07/2010 11:48

I personally prefer Nancy. But that may be down to the fact I knew an awful girl at school called Saskia who was a bully! Nancy is cool and retro.

MimiSas · 22/08/2010 15:26

Did you decide yet? My 7 week old is called Saskia so I obviously love the name. In our case you couldn't call it trying too hard as it's a very common (although somewhat dated) name in Holland and I'm Dutch ;)

Personally not too fond of Nancy as that's a bit chavvy in Holland, believe it or not.

But who cares, we're in the UK so it's totally irrelevant what I'm saying. Was just searching for posts with "Saskia" in the title and came across this one and was curious which name you are going to go with!

MimiSas · 22/08/2010 15:32

Sorry I just realised that 'chavvy' is a nasty term to use even if it refers to people in another country, didn't mean to do that and don't think I can change my own posts Blush

ValiumSingleton · 22/08/2010 15:40

Is Nancy more popular in The Netherlands than it is in the UK?
