would you name your child if it meant they shared a name with a famous person?

Depends on the famous person.

Ruby (as in Wax) - yes.

Adolf (as in Hitler) - No

TennisFan · 15/07/2010 15:08

If its very unusual too, then you might get weird looks.
You need to give us the name please

Depends on what it is..?

KSal · 15/07/2010 16:46

am currently considering this for as yet unborn child... would be same first and second name... just trying to decide if it matters as this is a minor celeb. My only worry is the 'celeb' in question seems a bit vacuous and has done FHM. On the other hand, by the time my baby is old enough for it to register hopefully this celeb will have disappeared from everyone's radar.

strandedatsea · 15/07/2010 16:48

Personally I wouldn't in case people thought you had chosen that name because you were a fan of that celeb.

Unless it is a name you absolutely love and won't consider anything else.

What's the name?

ShirleyKnot · 15/07/2010 16:48

I met a man called Michael Jackson the other day; he was about 25 and all, and I just thought "Your parents are thick"

KSal · 15/07/2010 17:06

mine isn't in the league of michael jackson!!

Mollydoggerson · 15/07/2010 17:24

I know Sinead O'Connor, really I do!

migola · 15/07/2010 17:53

Abi Titmuss?

valiumSingleton · 15/07/2010 18:48

I know somebody who has a name from a soap... I can't help it - it sounds daft to me. Although I presume it's because they didn't watch the soap rather than because they did.

DuelingFanjo · 15/07/2010 18:51

we love a particular name but with our surname it would mean it might look like we named our baby after a famous rightwing American politician who's surname became a phrase for (according to Wikipedia) "the political action of making accusations of disloyalty, subversion, or treason without proper regard for evidence."

Maybe not many people would make the connection but it's enough to have put me off the name!

rubbersoul · 15/07/2010 18:52

I knew a Robert Plant at school

Tuschinski · 15/07/2010 18:52

Depends on the celeb, their image and their likely longevity.
I really hope Katie Price will be a nobody once a child born today is in school but I wouldn't chance it. My brother's friend called his baby Eddie Murphy many years ago and we all thought it was hilarious but I doubt if any kids have heard of him now.
The likes of Michael Jackson will be famous forever so no in that case.

PennyDreadful · 15/07/2010 18:54

I know a Bartholomew Simpson - he's in his 60s so not the same issue here...but he has had folks put the phone down on him in disbelief.

My DC have been to school with Elizabeth Taylor and George Marshall.

CuppaTeaJanice · 15/07/2010 19:08

I knew a very elderly gentleman called Norman Cook, and I went to school with an Elton Johns. Also knew a Michael Jackson - he was a bit strange though, and he had his penis split in half lengthways.

I guess it depends how famous the person is, and if they are someone you would like your child to be named after.

KSal · 16/07/2010 12:42

mine is a relatively recent blue peter presenter... so soon to be off the radar surely!?

OnlyWantsOne · 16/07/2010 12:45

penis in half (ouch) cuppateajannice you slipped that in there quietly

valiumSingleton · 17/07/2010 08:55

Zoe Salmon? That's a nice name.

stdomingo · 17/07/2010 21:34

I went to college with Michael Jackson, John Prescott and Toni Hawk (in 2004).

Poor feckers!

KSal · 18/07/2010 16:32

errr yes... bloomin obvious really
glad you like it!

elvislives · 18/07/2010 16:44

There is a 4 yo at DD's nursery called Jack Nicholson. I still wonder why his parents couldn't have thought of another name every time I see his peg.
