Dulcie
Jessica
Charlotte
Florence

We love them and cannot decide, although Florence is proably bottom of the list due to Flo being used as a nn.

So what do you think of the names?
Do you like them?
What are your impressions of the names?

Dulcie -- not sure
Jessica -- ok but don't love it
Charlotte -- really like it
Florence -- ok but don't love Flo

grumpypumpkin · 16/07/2010 17:12

LaRag -Darcy probably isnt made up, I was just thinking there is a fashion for names like that at the mo, Darcy, Marcy, Macy, etc. I quite like them but wonder if they will become the over popular type names of the future?

bytheMoonlight · 16/07/2010 17:17

I don't think Noel Streatfeild liked the name Dulcie

Dulcie is my favourite. It's lovely.

I like Lottie too though, although not say crazy about Charlotte in full.

Florence is ok. Prefer Beatrice.

Jessica is very harsh sounding.

autodidact · 16/07/2010 18:53

Dulcie sounds like the name of a witch.
Jessica and Charlotte are classic perennials.
Florence is my favourite. Very popular at the moment.

bytheMoonlight · 17/07/2010 08:34

Does Dulcie really sound like the name of a witch?

May not gbe able to get that out my head now

OP posts:
valiumSingleton · 17/07/2010 08:47

Not in my opinion. It's quite fashionably old lady imo. It's definitely one of those names where you know she is going to be either 2 or 90.

seeker · 17/07/2010 08:48

Oh, i don't think Dulcie sounds like a witch - I'm afraid to me it sounds a bit wet. Particularly now I know that it's a Anglicization of Dolce.

Go for Florence, with Floss as a shortening.

valiumSingleton · 17/07/2010 08:49

Floss, like dental floss!? eurghghghghgh.

Flora is the only nice nn for Florence!

baskingseals · 17/07/2010 08:51

i think Dulcie was also the title or main character in a novel by H.E. Bates.

i love the name, it makes me think of hay-making and long golden evenings, and white lace petticoats.

Deemented · 17/07/2010 09:01

Dulcie - absolutely love it.

Jessica - over used, boring, safe.

Charlotte - same as Jessica

Florence - ok, but don't use nn Flora, not with the 'spreads easily' connotations.

seeker · 17/07/2010 09:05

"hay-making and long golden evenings, and white lace petticoats. " Perfest for the next generation of feminists!

baskingseals · 17/07/2010 09:08

we can have it all

bytheMoonlight · 17/07/2010 09:49

I'm pretty certain a daughter of mine will be a feminist regardless of what I call her Seeker - unless she rebels against all my principals

LaRagazzaInglese · 17/07/2010 10:21

grumpypumpkin I hope it isn't one of those names, I used to think Darcy was quite posh, like the ballerina, til I read on here that it's Essex chavvy!
I was so disappointed, there was a big poll and almost everyone agreed it was becoming a bit naff.
If I don't find another girls name it will have to be Darcy, I really like the name but now it's a bit tainted.
I would go for Dulcie but DH's (Italian) family won't be able to pronounce it the English way grr.

seeker · 17/07/2010 10:22

They will you know. I have nightmares of my dd becoming a tory voting accountant in an A- line skirt and sensible shoes married to another accountant living in a modern gated estate in Surbiton.

bytheMoonlight · 17/07/2010 10:24

Perhaps I should call her Poppy or Dasiy so there is no chance of having a career as an accountant due to not being taken seriously

ivykaty44 · 17/07/2010 10:24

dull, no
Jess, yes
Lottie, Char, or Charlie yes yes yes
Flo, Florrie no yes

the names will be shortened at school and this is my opinion based on secondary nn's

bytheMoonlight · 17/07/2010 10:27

Dulce rather than Dull hopefully

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 17/07/2010 10:31

But Dulce - isn't really that different and it could be "Dee" or Dullie

you can't pick what your childrens frinds at school will change the name to
Dulce - is to near the original name and not shorter or easier to say

bytheMoonlight · 17/07/2010 10:40

Well its one syllable less which is the main reason for choosing a nn.

However like you said, neither I (or you) can choose the nn so all I can do is concentrate on the BC name.

I work in a male dominated enviroment and most of the men are known by addaptions of their surname, it's something not worth considering unless thier is an obv. nn which you don't like eg Florence/Flo.
