Help, any suggestions appreciated! Particularly like ones which have nicknames.

My favourite is Marsaili (pronounced to rhyme with Parsley)

waitingforbedtime · 14/07/2010 18:27

Ive not heard of that one - just told dh - resounding no. Typical!

Any more suggestions?

Eilidh (Ay-leigh) I absolutely love, as well as Eilisaid (Ay-le-shay). But I am down South, and worry that no-one would be able to speel them/pronounce them correctly. Also my Auntie's name - Mhairi (Var-ee).

waitingforbedtime · 14/07/2010 19:00

Do you know Ive lived in Scotland for a long time and the only Mhairis I have met have pronounced it Marr-ree, Ive never heard of it being pronounced Var-ee!

I do like Eilisaid, very nice.

Do you think it is too 'out there'?

I can only find Ealasaid on Google, is it the same name?

OP posts:
CardyMow · 14/07/2010 19:36

It is the same name, Eilisaid is the 'older' version of it, it's Gaelic for Elizabeth (so my Scottish granny tells me...)

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 14/07/2010 19:43

Mhairi is deffo pronounced Varr-ee!

What about Isla, Catriona, Eilidh, Iona, or (personal favourite!) Maisie?

Eglu · 14/07/2010 19:55

I love Eildih. DH doesn't. I also like Aisling.

RipMacWinkle · 14/07/2010 20:49

I think Aisling is Irish.

In addition to the fine suggestions above are Mirrin (various spellings), Morven, Eilish, Morag and Senga

Thanks guys, sorry for late reply.

I really like Ealasaid, I really do but Im not sure if a/its too weird/unusual and b/what the definitive pronunciation is.

How weird about Mhairi, I have known 3 and they have all pronounced it with an 'M'.

Love Mirren, Ailish, Iona and Skye but they either dont go with out surname or are way too popular here.

Any more suggestions

(Vah-ree) is spelled Mhairi

if you want to prounounce it with an M:

(Mah-ree) is spelled Mairi

Cairistiona is nice

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/07/2010 09:04

pronounced cares-TEE-uh-na

RipMacWinkle · 15/07/2010 09:20

I'm Scottish, live in Scotland and always have and I've never heard of Ealasaid. So I don't reckon it's too popular which is good.

However, whilst I agree it does sound lovely you will always, always have to spell it out and/or correct pronunciation. That's not a reason not to choose a name but defo something to consider. Depends on a child's personality whether that's great or not.

What about something like Fiona?

Otherwise have you checked out the lists of names used in Scotland for the last 2 or 3 years? You can get the definitive list of every name used on a spreadsheet. Could you give you ideas (and also lets you see how popular names are)?

waitingforbedtime · 15/07/2010 09:26

Interesting re the Mhairi / Mairi. Every day's a school day as they say.

Cairistiona is nice but is too many letters I think!

I really do LOVE Ealasaid if it is pronounced Ay-le-shay or Ay-le-said but I have read on several places it is pronounced Ay-la-satch which Im not keen on. Again, I dont know whether it is just too unusual.

Keep suggestions coming please....

Iseabail (pr "ishbel") is lovely too, or even just "Ishbel" the Anglicised version.
