I don't like Chantelle at all, but have been drawn to this name for girl.
What do you think?

Beautiful name in it's own right, but unfortunately now sounds a bit BBish and chavvy. Sorry!

SandyBits · 13/07/2010 14:42

It looks like you've misspelt it. And yes, agree with the c word

Honeywitch · 13/07/2010 14:44

I knew a girl at school called this and really liked it. That was before chavs existed...

swanandduck · 13/07/2010 14:50

Well, that's the thing with names. Most of them start out with an okay reputation and then some of them just acquire negative associations.

Kathleen123 · 13/07/2010 14:51

Not sure. At school (about 15 years ago), a friend dated a girl called Chantal (who attended the local all girls private school), and at the time I thought it was a pretty name.

I think it has since become a chav name? Although to be fair its the person thats chavvy not the name. I know a Wayne, who's definitelly not a chav.

Bessie123 · 13/07/2010 14:53

I agree with the other posters. It is a really pretty name but unfortunately it sounds a bit chavvy now. On the other hand, it probably won't sound chavvy in about 10 years or so, when your dd would start noticing that kind of thing...

Pfishofplight · 13/07/2010 14:54

It's too close to Chantelle then? I thought so.

Isn't Chantal the French form?

mathanxiety · 13/07/2010 17:15

Chantal is beautiful, imo. Chantelle not so much. Chantal comes from either 'stone' or 'to sing' in Old French; strictly speaking, Chantelle is more related to 'candle', afaik, although Chantelle is also a fanciful spelling of Chantal.

Also, Jeanne-Francoise de Chantal was a French saint who was noted for her charitable work, piety, etc. Also known as Jane Frances de Chantal. Most French Chantals would be named for this saint.

MamaLazarou · 13/07/2010 17:20

Please revive Chantal. It's been ruined by Chantelle in recent years!

foreverastudent · 14/07/2010 08:20

Chantal- The 'proper' spelling, is a beautiful name IMO. It is also very uncommon.

alexisfaith · 14/07/2010 08:48

To me, it's beautiful because I always thought Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece (one of the Miller daughters, American) was very chic. In the UK now, it will sadly be confused with Chantelle and have negative associations. I would say don't use it simply because the name won't be pronounced or spelt correctly and the chic, softness of it will be lost. That's quite sad for lovely names!
