Myself and husband are Struggling to agree on boys names and I am due in 2 weeks so starting to panic a little now!

I really like the name Ralph but my husband isn't sure and needs some convincing, what are people's general thoughts on this name?

I thought it was a little different and not too popular although not too out of the ordinary? ?

Yep, Ralph is a penis.

polkadottytotty · 11/07/2010 21:01

I really like it pronounced as Rafe - was on our shortlist for a while.

rachel234 · 11/07/2010 22:07

I like Ralph/Ralf a lot. Quite popular in Germany, I think.

rachel234 · 11/07/2010 22:07

I thought a Will/Willy is a penis?

Not Ralph please, I amways thing of the one from Happy Days. Sorry. Plus pronounced Rafe sounds pretentious. (double sorry)

meadowlarks · 11/07/2010 22:21

I know a Ralph, I like it.

giantpurplepeopleeater · 12/07/2010 10:03

Ok - I think it could be good. However my other half loves the Simpsons and thinks it's hilarious. I can't hear the name without thinking about the character out of it!

This means that the name is associated with a rather snivelling, annoying, whiney character in my head. This might be the same for others (?)

cumbria81 · 12/07/2010 10:13

It always remind me of Judy Blume

or being sick

NorbertDentressangle · 12/07/2010 10:16

No sorry.

Reminds me of Ted and Ralph from The Fast Show.

BettyButterknife · 12/07/2010 10:17

I quite like it. I think Keeley Hawes has a Ralph.

Lifegoeson · 12/07/2010 10:22

Love it, also love Ted! Would probably be Ralphie for a few years for me.

Where in the country does it mean sick?!? Never heard of that...

Aw at lil' furry Ralph!

hulabula · 12/07/2010 10:46

I know a lovely Ralf, so I'm biased. I've never associated either a penis or being sick with the name, though..

GooseyLoosey · 12/07/2010 10:50

My grandfather was called Ralph but it was always pronounced Rahf. I always really liked it and was surprised later in life to discover that it was really "Ralf".

loler · 12/07/2010 11:04

My dad is Ralph - we always laugh because the dim character in any film is always Ralph. Not a good name although my dad is very lovely!

NormanNorris · 12/07/2010 11:05

I like Rafe as a short form of Rafael better

Kathleen123 · 12/07/2010 11:50

No offence to anyone, but I dont like the name Ralph.

Prinpo · 12/07/2010 23:49

I love it, but would definitely pronounce it as Ralf. I don't have any of the connotations mentioned above (but then I can be extremely dim-witted about such things).

Agree, though, that Rufus is a truly fabulous name too.

thedollyridesout · 12/07/2010 23:52

Reuben?

rocketupbum · 13/07/2010 08:50

I have a Ralf! ( I am not offended by the way!) We spell it with an f and also pronounce at that way. Obviously we totally love it and most people seem to think it is pretty cool - perhaps they are just being polite and then sniggering later. We havent met many, even now DS has started school.
Go for it. By the way our short list for other names was Hugh and Frank if that is any help.
Goood luck

BubbaAndBump · 13/07/2010 09:03

As mentioned by other MNers, all I can say is Judy Blume, Judy Blume, Judy Blume. Sorry.

shitforbrains · 13/07/2010 09:14

judy blume killed ralph as a prospective name

DandyDan · 13/07/2010 09:15

Although some people have read Judy Blume, lots and lots have not and would not make any book association with the name Ralph.

I have never ever heard of "ralph" connected with vomiting. Perhaps it depends on whether you pronounce it more "rolf" than "ralf".

I like it anyway, and the version that pronounces it Rafe. In fact it was always pronounced Rafe until about 1900.
