Possible coeliac, low vitamins

Apologies long back story coming……

I’ve been suffering for quite a while with crushing fatigue, heavier periods, joint pain mainly shoulders and elbow joints which I put down to perimenopause symptoms.

I saw my gp numerous times over the last 18 months and had some bloods done. My B12 came back 102 in 2025 though it has rose to 141 this year, serum ferritin was 11 now 33 after having a coil fitted and vit D is 22 (only had this tested recently for the 1st time)

The vitamin D has been treated with a loading dose course of tablets for 7 weeks which I have just finished. I also have B12 tablets.

not sure if this is relevant but do have IBS constipation and since turning 40 I find I have more flare ups especially mid cycle (before coil) but I have tried numerous diets/food elimination and it’s not been linked to any. For months I can go along with nothing then the constipation will appear for a few weeks even though I’ve had the same food all along. Since a child I’ve always had what I would call a slow digestive system and high fiber foods make the constipation worse.

now to the question as part of my recent blood tests to find the reason for the low vitamin levels the doctor randomly decided to test for coeliac even though I’ve not mentioned the constipation or any stomach issues. The results came back as Anti-tTg - 9
and Endomysial antibody IgA as a weak positive.

They have said it’s not a definite but to start a gluten free diet and no mention of anything further. Obviously I would prefer not to be GF.

has anyone had anything similar and it turned out not to be coeliac?

thank you if you’ve read this far.

Would you not rather be a coeliac? Then you can adress it and get rid of those horrible issues.

It's not bad at all being a coeliac these days. Feeling well in yourself is everything. Best wishes......

I am coeliac and you learn to handle it if you are as well.

I’ve been having joint aches and acid reflux, some elevated markers in my blood test which on second testing disappeared, thought it was the HRT/menopause but I have family history of a variety of oesophagus issues too - got tested for coeliac - came back clear. Now developed diarrhoea. I’m having an endoscopy this week to check my oesophagus and they want to do a biopsy just in case the blood test missed it. Must admit whilst I’m not keen on giving up wheat either, I’m very worried about the pain I’m currently experiencing - I can’t trust my body to do what it needs to do, so a diagnosis would be a relief. I’ve been on holiday for the last two weeks - I’ve developed knee pain, neck, shoulder - the pains come from nowhere, and diarrhoea (which is a new symptom).

I’m going to see a rheumatologist, to see if I can get some answers from that perspective. I’m so fed up - my activity levels have dropped enormously, I have osteoporosis and I need to stay active.

No they have this wrong. Dont stop eating gluten. You should be tested via endoscopy and have a formal diagnosis. Otherwise you will be gluten free for life possibly without reason. And yes you get used to it but blimey it’s shit if not needed.

the thing with the endoscopy test you should be eating gluten up to the test because otherwise you may get a false negative in the endoscopy.

The fact you’ve got your ferritin up to 33 with the coil suggests that’s period related - mine is 6 (was) I had an iron infusion after trying to get ferritin up for years.
