Dexa scan after coeliac diagnosis? Anyone else had this?

Hello, so I was diagnosed with coeliac disease this year (approximately two months ago) and my consultant wants to send me for a DEXA scan. I am 40 so I’ve been living with Coeliac disease all my life without knowing, which freaks me out because I feel like now my bones will be shocking. Anyone of a similar age in a similar situation how the DEXA scan and been okay? TIA

Yes, I had scan after coeliac diagnosis when I was about 45, it showed osteopenia which is precursor to osteoporosis. I take HRT and calcium/vitamin D supplements and keep active doing load bearing exercise. A follow up scan at around 55 showed no significant change from the earlier scan so it is probably as good as it can be now!

Yes, diagnosed at 50 and my dexa scan was fine. You won't have been necessarily living with coeliac disease all your life. 40% of people carry the gene and it can be triggered by different things later on in life. I suspect COVID triggered mine and my young adult daughter's.

I was diagnosed 1.5 years ago at 43 and my dexa scan was absolutely fine.

I do have a feeling I've always had coeliac disease as I remember having tummy and bowel issues as a child.

Yes have had DEXA following coeliac diagnosis as well as another condition which can increase risk of osteoporosis etc. The actual procedure is very quick and not invasive just an Xray they will get you to lie down on table and then position hips etc. and hand in certain positions that they need. As others have said, look at ensuring you are taking appropriate supplements and doing specific exercise weight bearing to assist with bone health as well.
