Urgent question re cooking for a person with coeliac

Wooden spoons and cross-contamination.

This is not a coeliac household, but I have coeliac friends and relatives who trust me to cook for them. I use unopened packets and am pedantic about ensuring that the utensils I use are scrupulously clean.

But I have never used my wooden spoons when cooking for coeliac people. Are they safe if they've been washed in the dishwasher, or are they a cross-contamination risk?

(Urgency is because I'm cooking tomorrow am, and wooden spoons are the perfect utensils for what I'm making.)

I have a coeliac son and didn't replace my wooden spoons when he was diagnosed but they do get dishwashers and I mostly cook non gluten stuff now so don't know when they last "touched " gluten
I may now replace and if you could easily get some new, I'd be tempted

If they’ve been washed in a dishwasher they will be fine. If you’re worried then silicone may be a better alternative as less absorbent.

A quick look on Google will tell you that wooden utensils could indeed harbour gluten particles.

I wouldn’t use wooden utensils that have previously touched gluten, it’s too high a risk for cross-contamination. Is it something you could buy a new one of for tomorrow if it makes cooking easier for you?

We switched to silicon as couldn’t take the risk.

Another "I wouldn't use them; silicone all the way" vote (coeliac in our household).

Fair enough. I won't use them. I had a niggle about them. It could be why I never have used them when cooking GF.

I always dishwasher mine but am going to get rid. Though I've not habitually used them for anything gluten containing as I have used stock and sauces which were gluten free anyway eg Henderson not Worcestershire sauce , tamari not soy so I hope I've not contaminated my son. Baking wise I did get new ones now I think of it.

I only use metal utensils, nothing wooden or plastic. I have a glass chopping board.
