Underactive Thyroid Results

SuperBlondie28 · 18/12/2024 19:48

Please help me interpret my results.

Serum TSH level
Serum TSH level 3.75 miu/L [0.3 - 5.5]; No biochemical evidence of primary thyroid
disease. If on T4, the TSH suggests adequate
treatment. If on antithyroid drugs or there is a
suspicion of pituitary disease, further tests may
be required.

I have a LOT of symptoms for an underactive thyroid plus my mum was diagnosed at 40 yrs old. She's now 76. I'm 49 just.

T4 was not tested...

The blood test was part of an BP meds check.

Thank you for help.

On you results, wasn’t there a column telling you whether the levels were within/above/below normal range? Mine tell me what the ‘normal’ range is too.

DrFosterWentToGloucester23 · 03/01/2025 23:28

I’ve just looked at mine and I believe the numbers in brackets above are the ‘normal’ range. So, at 3.75, your level is smack bang in the middle of [0.3-5.5] Which suggests, as it says above, that you do not appear to have a thyroid issue. However, I’m absolutely not medically trained in any way. This is me just comparing my own result feedback formatting to yours above.

Serum TSH level 3.75 miu/L [0.3 - 5.5]

I'm medically underactive as a result of treatment for an overactive thyroid. Whilst that result is within the 'normal' range of the test, for me personally that would be too high. I generally feel right when the TSH is <2.00.

Because that's in-range your GP is very unlikely to act on a single result. I'd speak with the GP, explain your supporting symptoms that might back-up a hypoactive thyroid, and request a repeat test in 2-3 months.

AlteredStater · 03/01/2025 23:36

I was actually very hypothyroid with a TSH of 3.75. I had a private test and that covered FT4 and FT3 as well as antibodies. My antibodies were very high. You need to get all the parameters tested, you can buy finger prick test kits from various companies, I use Medichecks.

DrFosterWentToGloucester23 · 03/01/2025 23:37

The British Thyroid Association Website suggests 4.0 is the top of the normal range so, as the poster above said, worth a further blood test to check TS4 levels.

Hi. I've had thyroid disease since I was 14.
My TSH is currently 16.2 and my t4 is 13.
Mines all over the shop. Your thyroid levels look ok to me? Borderline perhaps. X

Sorry OP I can't help with your question but may I ask where you are all seeing your results please? Are they from private tests?

The GP never shows me my results or explains anything. The closest I got was him telling down the phone that it was deranged and at 48. I told him I didn't know what he was talking about but he just kept repeating the same thing. I'm fine my results do this sometimes but I just never know what the results are so I can't look them up.

DrFosterWentToGloucester23 · 02/02/2025 13:36

I got my original blood test results back via a link in a text message. Now I ask the Endocrine nurse to tell me them and I write them down.

caringcarer · 02/02/2025 15:29

I always ask what my TSH is. I like it because below 3.5-4. Any higher and I start to feel sluggish and get constipated.

annonymousse · 02/02/2025 15:43

I take 150mcg thyroxine daily and my latest blood results give TSH of 4.4 which is above the upper limit for normal. The gp is going to test again in 3 months and if still high he will increase my prescription.

WarriorN · 22/02/2025 12:12

Just to add experience; I'm definitely best around tsh 0.6-1

Any lower (eg 0.3) and I feel just as unwell as when above 2 ish

I'm also having issues getting folate, b12 and ferritin in balance. Possible side affect of a long period of underactive levels before getting the right dose or there's another issue going on.

WarriorN · 22/02/2025 12:13

I find a lot of foods interfere with absorption so try to now take in the middle of the night (I usually wake up at some point) or try to wait an hour before I have anything to eat in the morning (just water - caffeine also interferes.)
