Overactive thyroid - insomnia help!

I've been struggling with an overactive thyroid for the past three months. Still waiting to hear from endocrinologist as to whether it's postpartum thyroiditis or Graves. The symptoms have been horrible - racing heart, palpitations, hair loss, nausea, fatigue and intense muscle weakness. And awful insomnia!😭Got two hours sleep last night. Hating that I'm too tired and unwell to be as active as I'd like with my baby.

I was already exhausted from pregnancy and labour complications and then just when I was starting to feel better this happened so I'm desperate to get it sorted.

I'm on beta blockers to slow my heart rate but can't take any meds to suppress thyroid until they know what's causing it.

So just after some positive experiences please. Anyone who had insomnia, did it go away once thyroid was medicated?

Just on your insomnia- yeah, I believe thyroid function has a massive impact on sleep. Meds should definitely help with that

Oh you poor thing, I have Graves and remember the lack of sleep, it was awful. I don't know how you can be managing to look after a baby when feeling that bad, I could barely do anything at my worst.
Yes, once medicated my sleep got better almost immediately and I felt much better after a week or so, so don't despair.
Chase up your Endocrinologist though, it's just a simple blood test to see if you have Graves so it shouldn't need to take so long, I'm appalled that they are leaving you in this state for so long ☹

If you are overactive then you should be on carbimazole. It’s dangerous not to be. Can you chase your GP to get a prescription while you wait to hear from the hospital. Your Dr should be able to phone the hospital. Also, tip - get copies of all of your blood tests and learn to read them. Consultants are not good when it comes to overactive thyroids, less so with Graves if this is what you have. Join the Facebook thyroid page and even the graves page and start to learn.

My consultant is shockingly bad unfortunately but I am medicated and have bloods every 2-3 months. Good luck. The meds should help with sleep although the beta blockers could be adding to your insomnia. I had to come off them as I didn’t sleep and when I did I had horrendous nightmares.
