Hi, I realise there are quite a few threads on this but didn’t want to hop on anyone else’s.
My dd has had scalp psoriasis for the past couple of years. I’ve had a difficult time trying to get it diagnosed by our GP, in fact first time he didn’t even examine her, instead told me off for taking her to the GP & said that I can buy over the counter tar shampoo for an itchy scalp!
Anyway, wrote a letter of complaint to my GP, took photos & sent it to dermatology, it was confirmed as psoriasis.
Anything we’ve tried hasn’t helped, we’re now using a shampoo from the skin shop however having read further regarding this, I’ve seen the link between psoriasis & arthritis psoriasis. My dd has no other symptoms & at this point have given up on any help from my GP. I know not all cases lead to arthritis psoriasis but she also has bilateral hip dysplasia & we were told when she was young should she not have an op it would mean she would be in a wheelchair from her teens.
sorry for the long post but does this in anyway mean she could be more prone to arthritis & do I need to push my Doctor more?

I am no expert but have had mild psoriasis for over 30 years and have no arthritis. I have a family member with both but the psoriatic arthritis came with old age (70+). I would say just deal with the immediate symptoms your DD has. I found castor/ fish oil helped a lot, a keratase sensitive scalp shampoo, and sun (with care of course).

pregnancy cleared mine up for a few years 🙄

How old is she? I'd take her to a different GP if the tar shampoo hasn't worked as there are specific prescription treatments for scalp psoriasis.

Sorry I don't know about any correlation with the hip issue.

People are more prone to psoriatic arthritis in older age when they have had psoriasis for many years. I know someone who developed it in mid fifties.

I am Mid 50s and just had tests for psoriatic arthritis. Only a doctor and tests can tell you.

As for shampoo tea tree oil drops in shampoo work well (only a couple of drops)

Thank you. She’s only 17. Had psoriasis for a couple of years. She had tried multiple prescribed shampoos etc but all left her hair greasy so we’ve just been buying our own.

I just didn’t know what the link was between the two & having read other threads it just made me wonder if she would be more susceptible (arthritis is something that was mentioned she most probably will develop due to her hips).

I might try taking her to a dermatologist & ask if they can give me a bit more info on the condition.

No advice about the link with arthritis sorry.

This shampoo was recommended on Mumsnet and it's the best I have found.

It doesn't particularly stop the flaking but has worked really well for me in the itching.

@sunflowerfan thank you, I’ll give that a go

I've had this since I was 12. The only thing I find that works for me is Betnovate scalp application. Definitely worth a try, it eases the itching and also patches reduce and sometimes clear up altogether. Until the next lot appear but it definitely helps me manage it much better.

Like @newyeardelurker i have scalp psoriasis. I have had it for over 30 years and don’t have arthritis either. I gave up on lotions, potions as I found that I either had a flare up or I would have a clear scalp. Stress aggravates a flare up.

The psoriatic arthritis is associated with psoriasis where the immune system attacks the joint. You also get inflammation in the ligaments and an associated fatique. The problem she has had with her hips won’t make her any more or less likely to develop psoriatic arthritis. Although the two conditions coexisting could make it more complicated. Just monitor for symptoms and see gp/specialists for any worries you have.
