What dose Amitryptaline for pain?

Hi

I have awful pelvic and lower back pain at the moment.

I’m being assessed for possible IBD and ankylosing spondylitis, (though also on a long waiting list for laporoscopy to look for suspected endometriosis).

Not sure yet what’s causing it!

Dr prescribed amitryptalin for the pain at night, as I’m struggling to sleep and can no longer take NSAIDs due to suspected IBD. Initially 10mg worked, but after a few weeks it stopped and I’ve increased the dose to 20 now.

has anyone else taken amitryptaline for pain, and did you have to keep on increasing the dose? I’m feeling a bit alarmed about becoming dependent on it and it becoming less effective the more I use…

If anyone else is taking it for pain - what dose are you on long term please?

Thanks!

I have been on Amitriptyline for many years, have been on 50 mg a day for the last 3 years. It doesn't get rid of the pain completely but it makes the pain more bearable. I have endo, fibromyalgia, FND and osteoarthritis. I felt like the effects were wearing off quickly on the lower doses too, but 50mg seems to be ok for me

I am now on duloxetine but when I was on amytriptyline I was in 60.

I have endometriosis and interstitial cystitis. I am on 75mg most nights, and my doctor is happy for me to go up to 100mg when I’m in a lot of pain (approximately 1 night a month). I sometimes go down to 40mg when I haven’t had pain for a few weeks.

Thanks everyone. I actually had no idea that the maintenance dose for pain could be so much higher… the GP didn’t really give me any guidance, just said to double the dose when I mentioned 10mg had stopped working.

it’s good that it seems to get to a point where it works (or helps enough) for you, and then you’re able to stop and stay at that level.

my experience (and concern) is based on taking Gabapentin many years ago, which although brilliant when I started, kept reducing in effectiveness until after two years I was stuck on the maximum dose. It was horrendous to come off it and I vowed never again!

However, here we are, and amitryptaline sounds like a different kettle of fish entirely

thanks again for your help!

I'm on 40mg now have been on 20 for many years but had a back spasm.

Need to reduce it back down.

The only think it really affect your sleep and I am now dependant on it for sleep not pain.
