How to unlock knee, mixed connective tissue disorder

It's never literally locked before. I'm also on cimzia and it's been really well controlled lately. Just randomly locked today. Really hurting too. Partner coming home from work to look after toddler.

I have called the emergency rheumatology line in Edinburgh and left a message, nothing back yet. I feel no other symptoms. If I could unlock this it would be fine. It hurts so much though.

Oh OP I have no experience but didn’t want to read and run. Would heat help to relax the nerves in the knee and allow it to unlock? Gentle massage? It sounds incredibly painful and I hope it resolves soon.

Thank you @Mammma91 , that's really kind.ni feel ridiculous but can barely move off bed and have 21month old. I just really want to unlock it and go back to living normally

Hey, I have EDS. Never locked a joint but when my back goes into spasm the only thing which helps is diazapam.

Hi,

I have EDS and my knees lock - I’ve had surgery on both to prevent this. Have you tried bending it back further - almost like unlocking a hinge? Sometimes I just have to wait. If it won’t unlock you’ll have to go to A&E as it can be an emergency if it won’t unlock at all.

You have my sympathies!

lie down with the back of the knee on a firm pillow. It ease back into place but might take a few hours

Knee locking is a ‘seek immediate medical advice’ thing. Try 111 first.

theotherfossilsister · 23/05/2024 17:23

I was really hoping I wouldn't need to call 111

Bless you, I know the feeling, I’ve got hypermobility syndrome disorder. It can make you feel so panicky and disheartened when you’re in the moment with these joint issues. Stay calm … try flicking the side of your knee cap with your fingers in case it’s dislocated itself.

Don’t hesitate to call for outside help, even an ambulance if you can barely move!

Good luck!

Thank you all. More movement today but still hurting and inflamed. Think rheumatology will call back soon x

I have a CTD and joint locking is a thing for me. It can be absolutely agonising.
Really, really gentle rotation and movement usually works for me. Once we called an ambulance as was stuck standing up for hours and couldn't move. Somehow the amazing staff managed to get me down and they got rid of the lock by gently pulling on the leg.
I have since had replacements and arthroscopies and I had a lot of loose 'debris' - cartilage and I think this was causing the locking for me - a piece of cartilage coming loose and getting stuck in the joint. The surgeries cured the locking anyway, only non operated joints lock now!
All the best.
