Support for Thyroid Diagnosis and Treatment

A leading endocrinologist is trying to improve diagnosis and treatment for thyroid conditions - these seem to be on the increase, and mainly impact women. If anyone would support this it would really be appreciated.

Many people respond to standard treatment once correctly diagnosed, and life returns to normal. Others don’t, due to genetic or other factors e.g absorption or conversion of the meds. Support for this could make a real difference. It’s scary how people can be put on statins or anti depressants, before the thyroid is even tested. Thank you x

I was lucky that after being told to exercise and diet for a few years, getting more and more exhausted, a new female GP did a thyroid test, I wasn’t even sure where my thyroid was!

I've signed it. I have Graves' Disease, my endocrinologist is great, my GP is so ignorant!

I have Hashimotos but I don't have an endocrinologist only a crap GP - how did you get an endocrinologist? Assuming you're in UK? Please let me know!

You have to be referred to an endocrinologist if you have an overactive thyroid, the GP will only treat you on advice from an endo.

Hashimotos is under active rather than overactive. To get an endo referral you need (in my experience) to push - keep going back to gp if your symptoms are not completely gone once you're on the 'right' dose of Levo as far as gp is concerned

Thankyou, and great that you have an endo who knows what he’s doing, gives hope that they are out there!

If you do manage to get your gp to refer you , if your results are in range I believe some endos just reject the referrals!

I am wondering whether to go private. Many endocrinologist specialise in diabetese, but Thyroiduk have a list of endos who understand thyroid, not just diabetes, it may be worth seeing if there is one in your region?
