Has anyone got any experience of or advice on insuring medication held at home and/or elsewhere?
I am being swapped over from IVs at the hospital to fortnightly injections (self administered) at home. The info I’ve been given says that given the high cost of the medication it is recommended that I check it is covered on my insurance as I may be liable to replace myself otherwise.
Does anyone know if this is something most insurance companies happily just add to an existing contents insurance policy or if I’d need to take out separate insurance. If the latter are there any companies that specialise in this?
I haven’t yet asked how much the medication is specifically which I guess I will need to know before contacting an insurance company, but I have been told it’s thousands a year.
I do know that I’ll be given 2 months at a time (so 4 doses) to store at home. Insurance needs to cover accidental dropping/damage and fridge malfunction or power cut causing it to fall outside the min and max temperatures.
Due to possibility of no one being home to accept it I was going to get it delivered to my DM so guess she will also need insurance. Unless I can get a policy that covers me wherever I have the medication. Would it perhaps be better to get it covered just at DM’s and administer it there? Presumably I may be on holiday or away at times so want something that covers those options too. I’ve been told it can be kept out of the fridge for up to 7days so can be taken away, but can’t then go back in a fridge or be used after the 7 days.
I had a quick look on my insurance company website and policy and there only seems to be an option to add a specific high cost item, which may work. Not sure if medication would be considered for an optional add on line that… Anyone got any experience of this?
