Colonoscopy prep help!

10 replies

GG1986 · 29/08/2023 21:59

I have a colonoscopy booked next week at 3pm. This is the first one I have ever had, can anyone tell me;

What time I need to stop eating solid food?
What time to start drinking the prep the night before?
Do I have half the prep on the evening before and the other half the following morning?
Can I drink coke?

Thank you x

What instructions have you been given?

MajesticWhine · 29/08/2023 22:02

You should be receiving some quite detailed instructions or somethings gone very wrong.

@GG1986

There are different types of colon prep (I've had two different varieties) so the instructions may be different depending on which you're given. The hospital should provide you with full instructions when they provide the prep.

As I recall though, only clear liquids (no Coke).

You'll get instructions with the bowel prep, but generally you can't have anything which isn't see through so no Coke. And nothing red. Water and clear soup and jelly is what I remember.
Drink the prep with a straw and keep it off your tongue, that way you avoid the taste!

Start taking it a bit earlier than they tell you. Be warned you will be sitting on the loo for three hours. You won’t be able to get off. I read a whole book.

As PP said, each prep gives slightly different instructions. However, it may be advisable to eat a low residue diet for several days before the procedure whatever the instructions say. By low residue they mean low fibre, no wholemeal products, no nuts and seeds or even fruit and veg. I recently had Picolax and these were the instructions. The poor woman in the opposite bed had Moviprep, and followed the instructions that said low fibre for two days before the day's fast. Her bowel was not clear and she was going to have to repeat the colonoscopy.

Call the department you have your test in and ask to speak to a nurse .
You should have been sent out specific instructions for the particular brand of preparation as they do differ, but they should’ve able to give you a run down of times .
You will probably have to follow a low fibre diet for 3 days prior to the preparation, make sure you have the information re what you can and can’t eat. Again, this should have been sent out to you, normally with the preparation you have to take.

Good luck! As a veteran of annual colonoscopies I start the low residue diet a day or so early - makes the clear-out slightly easier. Also, whatever you do, make sure you stop all food by the time mandated (if not before).
