Coeliac?

After 7 months of recurrent diarrhoea I have seen a GP who believes it may be Coeliac and I have been tested today (awaiting results)

I am struggle to agree if this is possible however as I don’t have symptoms every time I eat gluten, although every time I have diarrhoea is after eating lots of gluten.

Does anyone have coeliac or a gluten allergy and doesn’t react every time they consume it?

Yes there is such a thing as silent coeliac - no symptoms at all. My dd is coeliac and recently diagnosed so have been doing a lot of research - she didn’t always have gut problems, similar to you - sometimes she didn’t, sometimes she didn’t - her main one symptom was extreme fatigue to the point she could barely get out of bed, and low iron/ b12 and lots of mouth ulcers.
we didn’t suspect coeliac for a long time as always associated it with having a bad stomach. A lot of people don’t even know they have it but the internal damage will be happening anyway so it’s good to get a diagnosis.
hope you can find an answer. Good luck.

I didn't have any of the classic symptoms associated with Coeliac disease. But for many years my blood tests showed low ferritin and folate. Only got diagnosed when l got anaemic and tired years later. I am not anaemic now I'm on gluten free diet.

My daughters only symptom was extreme tiredness. No tummy issues at all.

I have lots of mouth ulcers actually - never considered it could be related!

Yes they’re a symptom - who knew? If you Google the symptoms there are lots that are less obvious that you might find you have.

My only symptoms were fatigue and a general feeling of 'unwellness'. Did not have any digestive symptoms at all.

My coeliac blood tests came back really high. I'm now nearly a year on from diagnosis and on a GF diet. I do get terrible stomach cramps and diarrhea if I accidentally ingest gluten now - all the tolerance I'd built up through daily consumption is now gone.

I think something like 50% of coeliacs ONLY present with anaemia (no GI symptoms).

It's a long term immune reaction to the protein in wheat which permeates the walls of your intestine. Symptoms wouldn't be immediately after wheat, they can stack up over time and the flare can be better /worse due to other factors.

The blood test, despite the cult of "gluten free crowd's" belief, is exceptionally accurate. Even with a blood test and a biopsy, the other real way to assess coeliac status is to test for improvement (symptoms and biopsy) with complete withdrawal of gluten.

I only found out I had coeliac disease when I was 50 as my hair started to fall out. No tummy issues no other common symptoms. Dr ran quite a few blood tests and then a I had the camera into my stomach to confirm. My hair is starting to grow back after 4 years. Funny thing is after going gluten free at 50 if I accidentally eat gluten now I have all the classic symptoms.
