Butterfly rash?

I keep getting this rash- I already have Hashimotos, pernicious anaemia, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia - and despite being on B12 injections and thyroxine I am so exhausted I can hardly manage my life.

Does anyone think it looks like a lupus type butterfly rash? It is very warm and feels a bit raised.

Possibly, but to me it looks like rosacea.

I think given your autoimmune history it’s a definite possibility- it also spares your nasolabial folds which is quite distinctive with Lupus.

Dilbertian · 04/06/2023 17:37

That looks like a photosensitivity reaction. Lupus isn't the only condition that causes it. Antihistamine can help. I have PMLE and would get a reaction like that (and worse). If you can take antihistamines, I would take a double dose now.

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 04/06/2023 17:43

Ooh thank you @Dilbertian I hadn't even thought of that, I normally just wait until it goes down

I have MCAS and get a rash like this

It's especially fun now I've started menopause!

Antihistamines shorten the amount of time it hangs around

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 04/06/2023 18:05

I looked at both PMLE and MCAS and seems like a long road to diagnosis so I'm sorry if you guys have struggled!!

MCAS is maybe ringing some bells as I do seem to have really severe reactions to god knows what. We were at a wedding recently and I think a Pimms (but who knows) made my face SO HOT and rashy and I was violently sick with the worst headache of my life. I also recently had some Thai food and was almost immediately sick and could hardly breathe..

Have you had a full thyroid panel done where you’ve seen the results yourself? You may need (for example) Liothyronine as well as Levothyroxine.

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 04/06/2023 19:03

@HeadsRollingInTheAisles ooh I'm not sure, what would that look like on my results?

Often the NHS just tests TSH and if that’s looking good (which it often will with levothyroxine - and even then they often will say substandard results for TSH are ok) then they’ll say all is good. But if you still have symptoms (tiredness, cold, dry skin etc etc) then it’s possible your body isn’t getting a good conversion of T4 to T3. So a full panel helps to show if that might be the case.

There’s lots of good info here and on how to read your results https://healthunlocked.com/thyroiduk

I took just levothyroxine for years and didn’t feel better until I was also prescribed Liothyronine.

Also - sorry if it’s too much info, but you might als benefit from being gluten free. Even if not celiac, there’s evidence that people with hashimotos can really struggle with gluten.

It does sound like you have other stuff going on, but knowing you have thyroid issues, it’s worth making sure you’re also covered fully on your known issues, if that makes sense!

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 04/06/2023 19:28

@HeadsRollingInTheAisles I really appreciate that thank you, I'm going to have a good read!
