Eating disorder and coeliac disease

Hi everyone.

Teen daughter has been diagnosed with coeliac for about 2 years. She has spoken with nutrition nurses twice in that time who gave the standard PowerPoint but weren't much use with our specific questions.

Dd has also been attending an eating disorder service due to disordered thinking about food and they say she is high risk for it to become anorexia.

The issue is the contradictions.
For her coeliac disease, she must examine all food labels and v hyper vigilant about ingredients.

For her eating disorder, she is supposed to not look at labels or think of calories.

The 2 teams won't speak to each other, despite me highlighting contractions and conflicts. They have both acknowledged the challenges but neither have come up with a suggestion.

Dd is now studying everything, sayj g she is checking for gluten but I know it is the calories. She is really restricting her food and says her stomach is tender so can't eat.
I'm struggling with this.
Has anyone dealt with similar?

That's really tough, at an age when they'd usually be starting to take over reading labels to check for gluten themselves and being responsible. DD has coeliac and an allergy and at ten is reading labels, as suggested by the dietitian.

Could you ditch your DD reading any labels for a while, say six months, and you take over completely?

My only other suggestion is to ask for a referral to a specialist centre. Some of the bigger hospitals have specialist who could help. That or some specialist psychotherapy but you may need to go privately.

What about using the coeliac society's app to scan the item and it will tell her if it is okay without all the intensive label reading.

Can you go and get her all the safe food she can have so then she doesnt need to check the labels ect?

hi folks.
thanks for your advice.

i check everything we buy so i know what is coeliac safe and all her food is kept sperate to make sure.

i have tried taking things out of packaging so the labels are no longer there but with her disordered thinking - she then goes and looks it up to find out. She is fixated on calories etc and will bypass me to find out.
mealtimes are a nightmare and there is so much tension around food at the minute. it is heartbreaking to see her like this and it seems to have got worse as her exams are looming. Its her means of control.

i have gone back to both the eating disorder clinic and the nutrition dept to see if they can get together and come up with something.
