Hi everyone. My 5 year old daughter has been passing blood and mucus alongside her stools and sometimes just passing blood without stools for almost 2y.
She was treated by a gastro consultant for constipation (never been constipated!) and put on movicol, and after realising this wasn't working, suspected polyps and referred us to evelina. Anyway, she had a OGD colonoscopy upper and lower last week, and the consultant came straight up and said he pretty much suspects she has UC, has taken biopsies and will rush the results through to get them within a fortnight. He said her rectum and lower colon is very red, angry and inflamed but her bowels are fine.
She's currently being treated with mesalamine suppositories which he gave us to come home with, this tells me he's pretty confident in his diagnosis?

I'm so concerned though. I'm so upset she has got this, I'm worried for her health and her future health, and my heads all over the place. Can anyone shed some light/advice/optimism on it, I know it may sound dramatic but my emotions are all over the place about it. Not sure what to expect really. Thanks x

My two kids have Crohn’s (same family as UC). It is really hard at first and absolutely gutting. Be kind to yourself while you come to terms with the diagnosis. I have found the Facebook group for UK parents of IBD absolutely invaluable and helps to feel less alone. Hopefully they can quickly get her on the right treatments.

I second Uk parents of children with IBD on Facebook.

I’ve had UC for 20 years- feel free to DM me. Its a really difficult thing to be diagnosed with but there is so much more support, awareness and treatments available. As a first port of call I would make an appt with an IBD specialist dietitian and don’t listen to any dinosaur consultants who say diet has nothing to do with. Diet and probiotics can help massively. I’ve been lucky enough to have had long periods (3 years) of deep remission with no symptoms at all and there is loads of research going on with new treatments that I expect with be available before long. Please feel free to DM me.
