Sharps bin at home

I've been given a sharps bin for injector pens - not used it yet.

The instructions say only to seal when it's full and ready for collection.

So does that mean until the collection day, it's just open?

I'm just thinking of the potential danger to small children and pets.

Am I missing something?

Thanks 🙂

Keep it in a high cupboard that they can't reach?

Sharps bins can be tricky things, especially as they don't all have the same design. Most of them have some sort of hinged or sliding plastic lid that can be brought to, but not actually shut properly - but it is easy to shut them completely by mistake, and once you have done that it is impossible (as in Tom Cruise Mission Impossible) to open the damn things again!

My only advice is to keep it out of reach of any children or animals, and then when it is full you close the aperture properly. As said above, once it is shut properly both children and animals should be completely safe.

There should be a line about 2/3 up the box. Once you get to that you need a new box.

Closing it depends on the box you get - when it is full you close it in a way it won't reopen. Some unfortunately have great big holes in the top - you just have to keep them in a safe place. Others have a temporary opening mechanism which is helpful.

Thank you. All my high shelves are open, and I didn't really want to put a sharps bin on display.

I'm thinking of buying a box to put it in.

Thanks for the warning about not closing it accidentally!

The ones I get from my local pharmacy have an opening lid that can be shut and reopened again, then you press more firmly and it locks the lid.
The ones Sciensus deliver are different and need to stay open until they're full so I keep them on top of the fridge then seal it when it's ready for pick-up

Yes, keep it in a high out of way place

I keep mine on top of the wardrobe, it's on display but visitors don't tend to go in our bedroom so it doesn't bother me too much
