I only have the TSH result at the moment (from kindly receptionist) but is that enough to say I need treatment for Hypothyroid?

Dr apt a week away.

I want to feel better 😕

blimey - I would say so

Icannoteven · 20/06/2022 11:48

Yes. Most Dr's treat if TSH is over 10. They will treat is TSH is over 4.5 if you als have antbodies, your T4 is low or sometimes if you have risk factors for CHD.

Personally I felt miles better after just 2 weeks on the starting dose of Levothyroxine.

Hope you feel better soon xx.

Oh thank you both so much for answering I’m actually crying now I’m so relieved I might feel better soon.

My symptoms started during chemo 5 years ago with a surgical menopause and I just last month realised all the main meno symptoms have now gone (thank god as no HRT allowed for me) but chills and exhaustion and a few other things still there or getting worse.

Feeling optimistic having taken the first of a lifetime of Levothyroxine this morning. Starting on 50mcg, bloods to be reviewed in 8 weeks. Fingers crossed life starts to feel a bit easier at some point soon.

FWIW I only feel well with TSH between 0 and 1, which my GP doesn’t like, as they’d rather you hover around 2-5 but go by symptoms - if you don’t feel better, you’re not better.

hope you start to feel the effects soon.

DotDotaDash · 12/07/2022 11:21

Thanks Roy

Can be a trial to get the actual result, GP wants to use general terms but we will see how we go.

I'm 2 weeks into treatment, gotta be honest I don’t feel any different… fewer chills maybe but then the weather has been consistently warm so who knows.

Struggling a lot with difficulty concentrating and while I am pleased to hear this is something that should improve now, I am very much impatient for that to happen.

I guess my weight and those two things are the biggies. I’ll be a new woman if those things improve.

I thought I’d update incase anyone reads in future.

4 weeks on meds now

The chills have gone, yay, I am no longer carrying a warm jumper to put on take off dozens of times a day. In fact I am sitting by an open window and can feel delicious cold air on my arms but it is not hitting me like a shockwave anymore 👍🏻

Ah that’s brilliant, glad you’re doing better already. Things can only improve as time goes on and the damage done by your low thyroid function is repaired. (N/C - Was Roy!)

Yay 8 week blood test yesterday and TSH is now 6.7 T4 is now 11.8 was 10.1.

I don’t feel so old and broken anymore but symptoms are now more like ‘symptoms’ in that I get a couple of hours of (frustrating) brain fog or random muscle weakness here and there. Also feeling lighter in mood 😊

Prescription upped to 75, retest in 8 weeks.

Thought is might be useful for anyone starting this journey to see my ‘case study’

Congrats. It's such a relief when you start to feel better x

DotDotaDash · 29/09/2022 09:26

About a month in to the increased prescription and I observe

I have gone off a chocolate 😯 don’t get me wrong I’ve tried to eat it a few times out of habit and it turns out I’m just not bothered. I think this is due to better energy and mood levels. In fact most food has become a bit take it or leave it - weird and welcome.

The brain fog has gone 😊eg I no longer need to write down the names of the characters in the book I’m reading and their relationships to refer to so I can follow the story!

still a bit grrr that I had accepted feeling so rubbish for so long before, it just crept up on me.

GP has been fab.

Yes. I have hashimotos and my tsh was 69.7 once, the lab actually called my gp to ask him to ring me as they were so concerned with the level to see if I'm feeling ok, and to repeat the bloods. Madness! Thyroid disease is actually so horrid to have if you're someone who can't control it properly, you need to start levothyroxine asap x
